The S&P/ASX 300 Index (ASX: XKO) is an appealing place to look for opportunities because companies included in the index have reached a certain size (and stability) but may still have plenty of growth potential to come.

I'm going to look at the return potential of EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT), which is one of the businesses that is liked by the investment team at the listed investment company (LIC) WAM Research Ltd (ASX: WAX).

WAM Research looks to invest in the most compelling undervalued growth opportunities in the Australian market and EVT was one of the top 20 holdings of the WAM Research portfolio at the end of March 2026.

The fund manager describes EVT as an Australian entertainment and hospitality company with operations spanning hotels, cinemas and travel experiences. It has around 100 hotels with more than 15,000 rooms, with cinemas across Australia, New Zealand and Germany.

Let's take a look at what could allow the business to provide capital growth of more than 20% in the next year.

What's to like about the ASX 300 share?

WAM Research pointed out that the company delivered a positive investment return during March, building on positive momentum from its FY26 half-year result released in February.

The HY26 result showed revenue growth of 5.4%, while net profit grew by 21.6%. It said that this result was supported by record performance in the hotels division and solid contributions from Thredbo and EVT's international operations.

In March, EVT completed a $750 million refinancing, extending debt maturities and improving covenant headroom.

WAM concluded its thoughts with the following:

This was broadly viewed by the market as enhancing financial flexibility to support future hotel expansion.

In terms of a trading update, the company is expecting the second half to show growth, subject to film performance and weather conditions.

The ASX 300 share's hotels division is expected to deliver another operating profit (EBITDA) record year. New growth is expected from previous growth initiatives.

In the entertainment division, the second is expected to show growth, while Thredbo visitation was impacted by regional bushfires, while the winter 2026 (the month of June) is subject to weather conditions.

What could the return be?

No-one can know what the returns are going to do, but analysts are optimistic about what could be next with the business.

According to CMC Invest, there are currently three buy ratings on the business, with an average price target of $16.85 between them, which implies a possible rise of 24% within the next year.

The lowest price target of $16.40, which would be a rise of over 20%. The highest price target is $17.31, which suggests a possible rise of 27%.

If I had a spare $10,000, here are five ASX shares I'd invest in. And they're all tipped to climb higher over the next 12 months.

AMP Ltd (ASX: AMP)

While 2026 so far has been a series of bad news events for the AMP share price, it looks like the stock could shift course and begin soaring again over the next 12 months.

This week, AMP confirmed it will undertake an on-market buyback of up to $150 million of ordinary shares and Blair Vernon has officially stepped into the CEO role. Sentiment could well follow suit.

Analysts have a strong buy rating on AMP shares and tip a potential 33% upside to $1.75 per share, at the time of writing.

Capstone Copper Corp (ASX: CSC)

Capstone shares have crashed 40% over the past six weeks driven by rising operating costs and production disruptions. But I think rising copper prices could renew some investor confidence in the ASX copper company's shares.

Capstone has confirmed 2026 production guidance of 200,000 to 230,000 tonnes of copper at C1 cash costs of US$2.45 to US$2.75 per pound. It also expects largely stable production in 2026, with growth anticipated from Mantoverde Optimised from 2027.

Analysts tip the shares to jump 45% higher to $15.10 a piece, at the time of writing.

EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT)

EVT is an Australian provider of entertainment, hospitality, tourism, and leisure-related services in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany. The company announced it has completed $750 million in refinancing this week.

The refinancing, together with EVT's non-core asset divestment program, is expected to give the business more financial flexibility and aid a business shift towards the hotel and accommodation sector.

Analysts tip a potential 20% upside to $15.90 a piece, at the time of writing.

Genesis Minerals Ltd (ASX: GMD)

The ASX gold stock's shares have tumbled nearly 27% over the past month after concerns about rising inflation and more interest rate hikes overshadowed gold's traditional safe-haven status.

The metal's price has tumbled from an all-time high on the 1st of March. But Genesis Minerals' has managed to maintain a strong revenue and earnings performance driven by increased production. I think as soon as gold comes back into favor, this ASX share will fly higher.

Analysts tip a potential 60% share price upside to $9.41, at the time of writing.

Newmont Corp (ASX: NEM)

Newmont is another ASX gold share which was oversold in March.

Declining gold prices have weighed heavily on the world's largest gold miner, with its share price down 19% over the course of the month. I think the stock could rebound sharply as the gold price recovers.

Analysts tip a potential 26% upside to $192.20 a piece, over the next 12 months.

The EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT) share price is pushing higher on Wednesday after the company released an update this morning.

At the time of writing, EVT shares are up 1.28% to $12.69.

Despite today's gain, the stock remains under pressure over a longer period, down close to 7% over the past 12 months.

Here's what the company announced to the market.

Refinancing lifts flexibility

EVT revealed it has successfully completed a refinancing of its debt facilities, increasing its total available funding to $750 million.

This marks an uplift from the previous $650 million facility and comes alongside the group's ongoing divestment of non-core assets.

Management said the new structure provides greater flexibility as EVT continues shifting its earnings mix toward its hotel operations.

The updated facilities include a $750 million revolving multi-currency loan and a smaller $5 million credit support facility, with a 3-year term.

Pricing on the debt is linked to leverage levels, with margins ranging between 1.25% and 2% per annum. EVT expects a weighted average of around 1.59%.

Backing from major lenders

The refinancing has been supported by a group of major banks, including Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA), HSBC, National Australia Bank Ltd (ASX: NAB), and Westpac Banking Corp (ASX: WBC).

The facilities are secured against a portion of EVT's property portfolio, with mortgages linked to 14 of the group's 34 properties.

At the time of refinancing, EVT reported drawn debt of around $610 million, along with more than $90 million in cash.

This leaves the company with additional liquidity and headroom to manage operations and potential investment opportunities.

Management noted strong support from lenders throughout the process, which may help reinforce confidence in the group's financial position.

What's driving the share price?

The gain seems to be driven by clearer visibility around EVT's debt position, with the refinancing giving investors more confidence in how the company is financed.

By refinancing the debt, this removes near-term uncertainty and provides a clearer picture of funding costs and the capital structure.

It also aligns with EVT's broader strategy of simplifying its portfolio and focusing more heavily on its hotel segment.

Foolish Takeaway

EVT's refinancing strengthens its balance sheet position and provides additional flexibility as it continues to reshape the business.

While the share price has lifted on the news, the stock remains below levels seen in August 2025.

The update reduces funding uncertainty, but longer-term performance depends on how the company executes its strategy and grows earnings over time.

The EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT) share price is in focus as the company boosts its main debt facilities to $750 million and secures improved lending terms, signalling ongoing support for its transformation toward the hotel sector.

What did EVT report?

Main debt facilities increased to $750 million, up from $650 million in 2023

Secured three-year multi-currency loan with improved margins (1.25%–2.00% vs 1.50%–3.15%)

Current drawn debt: approximately $610 million; credit support facility drawn: $5 million

Group cash holdings exceed $90 million

Four major banks (CBA, HSBC, NAB, WBC) actively participated in refinancing

What else do investors need to know?

The refinancing, together with EVT's non-core asset divestment program, is designed to give the business greater financial flexibility as it continues to shift its earnings profile toward its hotel and accommodation sector. The new facility is backed by guarantees from most Australian and New Zealand group entities, and secured by property mortgages covering 14 of EVT's 34 properties, valued at around $1.1 billion.

Interest on the new loan is set according to a leverage ratio grid, with EVT anticipating a current weighted average margin of approximately 1.59% per year. This will be reassessed every six months based on updated earnings and debt levels.

What did EVT management say?

Ms Jane Hastings, EVT CEO, said:

EVT extends its appreciation to NAB, CBA, HSBC and WBC for their strong support and desire to participate as lenders for our Group. We look forward to working with all our banking partners as we continue to progress our growth plans.

What's next for EVT?

With new banking facilities in place and ample cash on hand, EVT is well-positioned to continue evolving its portfolio and investing in its growing hotel operations. Management highlighted the refinancing as a key foundation for future growth and flexibility, supporting the group's long-term strategic direction. Investors can expect further updates as EVT progresses its divestment program and seeks new opportunities within the hotel sector.

EVT share price snapshot

Over the past 12 months, EVT shares have declined 7%, trailing the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) which has risen 7% over the same period.

Which companies will we hear from today?

The big one today is the half-yearly report from supermarket network Coles Group Ltd (ASX: COL).

Woolworths shares ripped this week after the ASX All Ords consumer staples giant reported a 16% profit lift to $859 million for 1H FY26.

We'll also hear from TPG Telecom Ltd (ASX: TPG), Michael Hill International Ltd (ASX: MHJ), and Pexa Group Ltd (ASX: PXA).

The latest report from The Star Entertainment Group Ltd (ASX: SGR) will also be interesting, as investors seek further news on the turnaround plan for the beleaguered casino operator.

Yesterday, Star Entertainment shares bounced on news of a debt refinancing deal, including extra liquidity to fund the turnaround plan.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is on course to end the shortened week with a decline. At the time of writing, the benchmark index is down 0.6% to 8,742.5 points.

Four ASX shares that are falling more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Brightstar Resources Ltd (ASX: BTR)

The Brightstar Resources share price is down 8% to 52.2 cents. Investors have been selling this gold miner's shares following the release of a production revision. Brightstar revealed that it achieved production and sales of 4,652 ounces of gold in November. This is down from its unreconciled production update, which initially indicated total recovered gold production of 6,300 ounces. Brightstar's managing director, Alex Rovira, commented: "Whilst this is an unfortunate set-back to the November processing campaign, all stakeholders remain confident that optimal conditions in future processing will see a material lift in recoveries in line with historical processing data."

EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT)

The EVT share price is down 2% to $12.82. This morning, this hotel, cinema, restaurant, and resorts operator announced the acquisition of QT Auckland. It is a premium lifestyle hotel located in Auckland's Viaduct precinct. EVT has agreed to pay NZ$87.5 million (~A$76 million) to secure the asset. Management believes the acquisition secures long-term brand presence in a key strategic location and further strengthens its owned hotel portfolio. EVT also announced the sale of Rydges Geelong for $24.5 million. It was previously designated as a non-core asset.

Monash IVF Group Ltd (ASX: MVF)

The Monash IVF share price is down 15% to 69.5 cents. This has been driven by news that the consortium comprising Genesis Capital Investment Management and Washington H. Soul Pattinson and Co Ltd (ASX: SOL) has withdrawn its non-binding indicative proposal. It was looking at a deal to acquire 100% of Monash IVF at $0.80 per share by way of a scheme of arrangement. No reasons were given for the withdrawal of the proposal. It only stated: "If there are material developments in the future, Monash IVF will inform shareholders as required under its continuous disclosure obligations."

Pro Medicus Ltd (ASX: PME)

The Pro Medicus share price is down almost 3% to $225.64. This is despite there being no news out the health imaging technology company. However, it is worth noting that the tech sector is under pressure today ahead of the Christmas break. This has seen the S&P ASX All Technology index drop 1.2% on Wednesday.

What did EVT report?

Acquisition of QT Auckland, a 150-room premium lifestyle hotel, for NZ$87.5 million (~A$76 million)

Strategic expansion aligns with hotel division growth strategy and asset ownership in key city locations

Divestment of Rydges Geelong for $24.5 million as part of capital recycling initiative

Completion of both transactions expected early in the 2026 calendar year

QT Auckland has won multiple industry awards since opening in 2020

What else do investors need to know?

This acquisition secures long-term brand presence for EVT in Auckland's vibrant Viaduct precinct—an area popular with business and leisure travellers. The purchase cements EVT's strategic approach to focus on high-performing hotels in major city locations.

Funds from the sale of Rydges Geelong, described as a non-core asset, will be redirected to support this investment. EVT's asset recycling program is designed to strengthen its property portfolio and improve profitability by investing in flagship locations.

The QT brand continues to grow both locally and internationally, with new openings such as QT Singapore and plans for QT Parramatta to open in 2027.

What did EVT management say?

EVT CEO Jane Hastings said:

We are pleased to secure ownership of one of our flagship QT hotels, reinforcing our commitment to growing earnings from owned hotel assets and advancing our broader hotel brand strategy. This investment also complements the upcoming conversion of our Queenstown property to the QT brand, which will be an exceptional property in one of our strongest markets, with Auckland serving as a key feeder market for international visitors to Queenstown.

What's next for EVT?

Looking ahead, EVT plans to complete both the QT Auckland acquisition and the Rydges Geelong sale in early 2026, subject to conditions being met. The company aims to drive further growth with its asset-light QT brand expansion, hotel management agreements, and innovative brand extensions such as qtQT cabins.

Management has highlighted a focus on portfolio optimisation, international market entry, and ongoing capital recycling to maximise returns for shareholders. The opening of QT Parramatta and further brand rollouts are expected to complement the Group's growth strategy.

EVT share price snapshot

Over the past 12 months, EVT shares have risen 15%, outperforming the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) which has increased 7% over the same period.

EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT) is a communications stock that has had an up and down 2025.

It is an Australian provider of entertainment, hospitality, tourism, and leisure-related services. The company operates cinemas, hotels, bars, restaurants, theatres, and resorts in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany.

Familiar names that fall under the umbrella of the company include Event Cinemas, Greater Union Cinemas, Rydges Hotels, QT Hotels, and the Thredbo Alpine Village in New South Wales.

At the start of the year, shares in EVT were trading at $11.28 each. Fast-forward to August, and it had enjoyed a strong year and was sitting at $17.75 per share.

That's more than a 57% increase.

However, since hitting that 52-week high in late August, this communications stock has tumbled more than 20% and closed yesterday at $13.65 each.

Earnings season results

Key results released on August 25 included:

Normalised Revenue: $1,236.9 million, up 1.3%

Normalised EBITDA: $160.8 million, up 6.3%

Normalised Profit After Tax: $38.4 million, up 12.7%

Reported Net Profit After Tax: $33.4 million, up 593.4%

Final Dividend: 22 cents per share

Speaking on the results, Jane Hastings, CEO of EVT, said:

We continued to make solid progress with our Group strategic initiatives. We achieved a record hotels group result, our entertainment group achieved record spend metrics and demonstrated evidence of the material operating leverage we have created.

It seems investors were not overly impressed with the results, as the share price has fallen 6% since the results last week for this ASX communications stock.

Is there opportunity following the sell-off?

After an outstanding run in the first 7 or 8 months of the year and an abrupt decline, brokers still see upside for this ASX communications stock.

Broker Bell Potter has an overweight recommendation and price target of $16.42.

From yesterday's closing price of $13.65, this indicates an upside of 20%.

Similarly, TradingView has a 12-month price target of $16.16.

Online brokerage platform Selfwealth also estimates the stock is close to 20% undervalued.

Based on these estimates, it seems that EVT shares were trading close to fair value before the recent sell-off.

Australian billionaires are well known for investing. While some have inherited their fortunes, others have founded and scaled huge businesses from the ground up. What they all have in common is that they all rely on strategic investing to multiply and protect their assets.

Some invest in safe-haven stocks and assets, while others are willing to take on more risk in the hope of hitting the jackpot.

The Australian recently compiled a list of 10 Australian billionaires, and the stocks they like to invest their money into.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) snatched a tentative win from the jaws of defeat this Tuesday.

After starting the session deep in red territory, investors regained a sense of optimism over the trading day, with the ASX 200 finishing with a gain of 0.079%. That leaves the index at 8,704.6 points.

This nervous Tuesday session for Australian investors comes after a mixed start to the American trading week on Wall Street last night.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) couldn't quite stick the landing, falling 0.14%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) did stick said landing though, rising 0.33%.

But let's return to the local markets now and take stock of how the various ASX sectors handled today's trading conditions.

Winners and losers

There were plenty of both winners and losers this Tuesday.

Starting with the latter, it was real estate investment trusts (REITs) that copped the worst of it today. The S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index (ASX: XPJ) ended up taking a 0.47% tumble.

Gold stocks also had a relatively rough session, with the All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD) diving 0.28%.

Consumer staples shares were no safe haven either. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ) ended up dipping 0.21%.

Financial stocks were also looked over, illustrated by the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ)'s 0.17% slide.

Our final losers today were mining shares. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) slipped 0.05% lower by the closing bell.

Turning to the winners now, it was energy stocks that stood out, with the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) bouncing 0.57% higher.

Industrial shares had a decent day as well. The S&P/ASX 200 Industrials Index (ASX: XNJ) lifted by 0.33% this session.

Then we had healthcare stocks, with the S&P/ASX 200 Healthcare Index (ASX: XHJ) also rising 0.33%.

Tech stocks found some buyers, as you can see from the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ)'s 0.2% bump.

We could say the same for utilities stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ) enjoyed a 0.15% improvement this Tuesday.

Next up, we had consumer discretionary shares, with the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) adding 0.1% to its total.

Finally, communications stocks did half as well. The S&P/ASX 200 Communication Services Index (ASX: XTJ) was bid up 0.05% higher by the end of trading.

The ASX share market can be a great place to find businesses that have strong growth outlooks. Those companies could be giants worth tens of billions of dollars on the ASX or a fraction of that scale. Pleasingly, a leading fund manager has identified two businesses that are viewed as undervalued ASX shares.

In this article, the two stocks we're going to look at are within the WAM Research Ltd (ASX: WAX) portfolio, which is a listed investment company (LIC). The investment team at Wilson Asset Management are looking for the most compelling, undervalued growth opportunities in the Australian market.

With that in mind, let's look at the two ASX shares that WAM has picked out.

EVT Ltd (ASX: EVT)

WAM noted that EVT operates cinemas, hotels, restaurants, and resorts in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and Singapore.

The company released its FY25 half-year result in February, which included normalised operating profit (EBITDA) of $99.6 million, a 3.7% increase from the prior year. Normalised net profit after tax (NPAT) grew 8.3% year over year to $31.5 million.

WAM believes the undervalued ASX share's property portfolio, valued at approximately $2.3 billion, remains a solid asset base. The investment team also noted that its entertainment division "continues to perform strongly".

Explaining why WAM is bullish on the business, the fund manager explained:

We are excited by the growth outlook in the company's entertainment segment with a strong lineup of blockbuster films to drive FY2026 performance.

Generation Development Group Ltd (ASX: GDG)

The second business that WAM talked about is Generation Development Group, which the fund manager described as a diversified financial services company with notable positions in the investment bonds, lifetime annuities, and research and ratings sectors through its brands Generation Life and Lonsec.

The investment team noted that in February, the company announced the acquisition of Evidentia Group, a leading provider of investment management and tailored managed account solutions, for $320 million.

WAM believes this acquisition solidified the business' position as a "market leader" in the managed accounts sector, with combined funds under management (FUM) of more than $25 billion.

On top of that, the fund manager noted the undervalued ASX share delivered a "strong" FY25 interim result, with revenue rising by 198% and underlying net profit after tax (NPAT) growing 152% year over year. The fund manager believes this provides a "compelling outlook for the year".

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) ended the trading week on a very sour note this Friday, cementing the end of a rough fortnight for the Australian share market.

By the end of trading this Friday, the ASX 200 had plunged down 1.16%, leaving the index at just 8,172.4 points.

This dismal conclusion to the week's trading for the ASX follows a similarly awful morning over on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) slumped by 0.45% this morning, despite spending much of the day in positive territory.

It was far worse for the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) though, which crashed 2.78% lower.

But let's grit our teeth, get back to the local markets now, and assess the damage from today's trading in the different ASX sectors.

Winners and losers

Only one ASX sector escaped today's market carnage. But more on that in a moment.

The worst place to be invested this Friday was in tech stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) was singled out for punishment, crashing 2.86% lower.

Mining shares were almost as bad, with the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) plunging 2.47%.

Gold stocks were no safe haven. Today, the All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD) tanked by 2.36%.

Consumer staples shares bore much of the selling as well, evidenced by the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ)'s 2.25% dive.

Next on the red list were real estate investment trusts (REITs). The S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index (ASX: XPJ) lost 1.55% of its value today.

Consumer discretionary stocks weren't far off that, with the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) cratering by 1.43%.

Utility shares took a hit, also. The S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ) ended up slumping 1.11%.

As did healthcare stocks, illustrated by the S&P/ASX 200 Healthcare Index (ASX: XHJ)'s 1.07% shellacking.

Industrial shares weren't spared. The S&P/ASX 200 Industrials Index (ASX: XNJ) was sent home 0.91% lower today.

Energy stocks were also affected, with the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) slipping 0.66%.

Our final losers were financial shares. The S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) got off relatively lightly, though, dipping 0.31%.

Our only winners today were communications stocks. Investors were clearly hiding out in this sector, as you can see from the S&P/ASX 200 Communication Services Index (ASX: XTJ)'s 0.24% rise.

It was a disappointing Tuesday session for the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) and many ASX shares today. After snatching a win yesterday, the ASX 200 had no such luck today, tanking 0.68%. That leaves the index at 8,251.9 points.

This unhappy Tuesday for ASX shares comes after a rough opening session for US stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) managed to hold its ground, inching 0.076% higher.

However, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) was pummelled, dropping 1.21%.

But let's return to the local markets now and take a look at how the various ASX sectors handled today's rough trading conditions.

Winners and losers

There were far more red sectors in today's market than green ones.

Leading those red sectors were consumer discretionary stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) was in freefall today, tanking 2.66%.

We could say the same for tech shares, with the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) plunging 1.58%.

Mining stocks were also shunned. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) cratered by 0.89% this session.

Communications shares were overlooked too, evidenced by the S&P/ASX 200 Communication Services Index (ASX: XTJ)'s 0.69% slump.

Industrial stocks copped a belting today. The S&P/ASX 200 Industrials Index (ASX: XNJ) ended up falling 0.65%.

Financial shares came next, with the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) seeing its value cut by 0.62% today.

Real estate investment trusts (REITs) found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger as well. The S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index (ASX: XPJ) was sent home 0.39% lower.

Turning to the winners now, it was utility shares that again came out on top, as you'll see from the S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ)'s 1.6% surge this Tuesday.

Gold stocks shone brightly as well, illustrated by the All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD)'s 0.7% lift.

Consumer staples shares weathered the storm too. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ) bounced 0.32% higher this session.

Energy stocks were right behind that, with the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) adding 0.31% to its total.

Finally, healthcare stocks made the lucky list. The S&P/ASX 200 Healthcare Index (ASX: XHJ) rose by 0.29% by the closing bell.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) had a wild start to the week's trading this Monday. Overcoming a big opening loss, it finished 0.14% higher by the closing bell, breaking last week's five-day losing streak in the process.

That leaves the ASX 200 sitting at 8,308.2 points this Monday afternoon.

This haphazard day for ASX shares follows a disastrous end to the trading week on Saturday morning (our time) for American investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) had a shocker, falling 1.69%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC) fared even worse though, plunging 2.2%.

But let's return to this week and happier tidings with an examination of how today's choppy trading conditions filtered through to the different ASX sectors.

Winners and losers

We had plenty of both winners and losers this Monday.

Leading the latter were tech stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ) was smashed by investors this session, crashing a horrid 6.84%.

Real estate investment trusts (REITs) had a terrible time too, with the S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index (ASX: XPJ) losing 2.18% of its value.

Gold shares weren't providing any safe harbour. The All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD) ended up tanking by 2.04%.

Mining stocks were also punished by investors, evidenced by the S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ)'s 1.41% dive.

Energy shares managed to improve on that. The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) still fell 0.82% though.

Our last losers were industrial stocks, with the S&P/ASX 200 Industrials Index (ASX: XNJ) dipping 0.2%.

Turning to the winners now, it was utility shares that led the pack. The S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ) had a phenomenal session, rocketing up 3.24%.

Financial shares were running hot as well, illustrated by the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ)'s 1.89% surge higher.

Consumer discretionary stocks were also in demand. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) soared 1.13% today.

Its consumer staples counterpart was close behind, with the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ) adding 0.96% to its total.

Healthcare stocks were next up. The S&P/ASX 200 Healthcare Index (ASX: XHJ) managed a 0.53% lift this Monday.

Finally, communications shares brought home a gain, as you can see from the S&P/ASX 200 Communication Services Index (ASX: XTJ)'s 0.11% rise.
