Spark is one of only two large integrated telecommunications companies in New Zealand. It is the dominant provider of fixed-line services in the country and effectively equal-number-one player in the mobile telephony market. It also boastsa commanding presence in the New Zealand corporate and wholesale telecommunications services provision space. Spark's operations are split into mobile, voice, broadband, and digital-related services.

In 2009 Paul was recognised by the IPTV World Forum with its Special Merit Award for Outstanding Industry Contribution and in 2008 he was listed as one of the Global Telecoms Business Magazine's top 100 "most influential persons in telecoms". Paul is a director of Rain Networks in South Africa, and a former director of the global Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance of mobile network operators.
