And many of its top performers were mining stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XEJ) lifted 1.9%. Market giants BHP Group Ltd (ASX: BHP), Rio Tinto Ltd (ASX: RIO), and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX: FMG) all outperformed the market, rising 2.5%, 2.5%, and 4.1% respectively.

The next best-performing sector was the S&P/ASX 200 Heath Care Index (ASX: XHJ) – rising 1.1%.

On the other hand, the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) fell 0.8% despite oil prices lifting overnight. Brent crude oil gained 1.3% to close Thursday's session overseas at US$79.27 while US Nymex crude oil improved 1.9% to US$74.37 a barrel.
