It was an exceptional day for ASX shares and the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) this Thursday.

The ASX 200 spent most of the session climbing and finished up with a 0.55% rise at 8,493.7 points. That was after the index hit a new all-time record intraday high of 8,515.7 points this afternoon.

This happy Thursday for the ASX follows a negative session over on Wall Street in the early hours of this morning.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX: .DJI) had a rough time, dropping 0.31%.

It was even worse for the Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ: .IXIC), which retreated by 0.51%.

But let's get back to happier tidings now with a checkup on what the different ASX sectors were doing this Thursday.

Winners and losers

Once again, this Thursday only produced one red sector.

That red sector was gold shares. The All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD) missed out on today's gains and retreated by 0.25%.

But it was all smiles everywhere else.

Leading the winners were energy stocks, with the S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (ASX: XEJ) soaring up 1.2%.

Consumer discretionary shares had a great day too. The S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (ASX: XDJ) enjoyed a 1.11% surge.

Its consumer staples counterpart pared similarly, as you'll see from the S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (ASX: XSJ)'s 0.95% gallop higher.

Financial shares were a little more muted, though. The S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (ASX: XFJ) jumped 0.66% today.

Healthcare stocks came in just behind that, with the S&P/ASX 200 Healthcare Index (ASX: XHJ) rising by 0.61%.

Mining shares were next up. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) bounced 0.42% higher this session.

Miners were followed by tech stocks, illustrated by the S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (ASX: XIJ)'s 0.23% improvement.

Real estate investment trusts (REITs) found themselves on the right side of the ledger. The S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index (ASX: XPJ) ticked up 0.16%.

As did utilities shares, with the S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (ASX: XUJ) enjoying a 0.12% lift.

Industrial stocks eked out a gain as well. The S&P/ASX 200 Industrials Index (ASX: XNJ) added 0.06% to its total today.

Finally, communications shares barely squeaked into the winners, evidenced by the S&P/ASX 200 Communication Services Index (ASX: XTJ)'s 0.05% inch higher.
