Today, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) inched its way higher to finish the week on a positive note. At the end of the day, the benchmark index rose 0.23% higher to 7,396.5 points.

While there weren't any sectors bringing home a 1% or more return today, there were still a few strong leaders in the pack. Out of the bunch, healthcare, energy, and consumer staples delivered the largest contributions to the index. Meanwhile, the laggards were more subdued which avoided substantial downwards pressure on today.

The question is: which shares delivered the biggest returns to investors on the ASX today? Here are the ten stocks that rose to the occasion:

Top 10 ASX shares countdown today

Looking at the top 200 listed companies, Crown Resorts Ltd (ASX: CWN) was the biggest gainer today. Shares in the entertainment group surged an astounding 16.77% after receiving a takeover offer from private equity firm Blackstone. Find out more about Crown Resorts here.
