Best and worst stocks on the ASX today

The market has finished Tuesday’s session well off its early morning lows with the S&P/ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) closing the day down just 0.06%.

The flat close is a good result considering the action overnight on Wall Street where the Dow Jones fell 1.02% and the S&P 500 lost 1.08% as technology stocks such as Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) continued to come under selling pressure.

On the ASX, sectors were mixed; industrials and consumer discretionary led the decliners with falls of 0.91% and 0.8% respectively; while materials helped along by gold stocks and the major miners saw gains of 0.49%, while and property provided support with gains of 0.48%.
