In afternoon trade, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is on course to record a modest gain. At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 0.2% to 8,631.7 points.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are falling:

Brightstar Resources Ltd (ASX: BTR)

The Brightstar Resources share price is down 4% to 41.7 cents. This appears to have been driven by the gold miner issuing almost 245 million new shares this morning. Last month, Brightstar Resources announced a strategic $180 million capital raising to fund a material increase in production. Brightstar's managing director, Alex Rovira, said: "To emerge with all the equity funding required to build our Goldfields Hub, as well as a substantial budget that enables accelerated pre-development activities at Sandstone and to fully fund Sandstone to FID, is an amazing opportunity for Brightstar that enables us to maintain the momentum of de-risking our portfolio of advanced gold projects."

EQ Resources Ltd (ASX: EQR)

The EQ Resources share price is down 6.5% to 29 cents. This is despite the tungsten producer releasing an investor presentation this morning. Within the presentation, management stated: "EQR is one of the largest producers of tungsten outside of restricted countries, with spot-priced offtake agreements in place, supplying Europe, North America and Asian markets."

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down almost 5% to 26.2 cents. This has been driven by news that the battery technology company's NASDAQ-traded shares could be delisted due to its weak share price. It advised: "The notice states that, for the previous 30 consecutive business days, the closing bid price of the Company's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) listed on the Nasdaq has been below the minimum requirement of US$1.00 per ADR. In accordance with Nasdaq Listing Rules, the Company has 180 calendar days from the date of the notice to regain compliance (compliance period). To regain compliance, the closing bid price of the Company's ADR's must be at least US$1.00 per ADR for a minimum of 10 consecutive business days during the compliance period."

Pro Medicus Ltd (ASX: PME)

The Pro Medicus share price is down a further 2% to $125.40. This is despite there being no news out of the health imaging technology company. However, Pro Medicus' shares have been under pressure this year amid concerns over AI disruption. This has seen the Pro Medicus share price lose over 40% of its value since the turn of the year.

In afternoon trade, the benchmark index is down 0.85% to 8,818 points.

Four ASX shares that are falling more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Boss Energy Ltd (ASX: BOE)

The Boss Energy share price is down 6% to $1.91. This appears to have been driven by broad weakness in the uranium industry today. In addition, short sellers have been loading up on Boss Energy and other uranium shares. So much so, a total of 21.6% of its shares are in the hands of short sellers at present. And with its shares down 47% over the past six months, they have done well from this one.

G8 Education Ltd (ASX: GEM)

The G8 Education share price is down 13% to 70 cents. This morning, this childcare operator revealed that its occupancy levels remain subdued. This is due to "the macroeconomic environment remaining challenging and affordability and cost of living pressures continuing to impact families." According to the release, as at 2 November 2025, the company's spot occupancy was 68.3%, which is 6.6% points lower than the prior corresponding period. In light of this, it has downgraded its full year earnings guidance to be in the range of $91 million to $98 million.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down 11% to 50.25 cents. This has been driven by news that auto giant Stellantis has cancelled its offtake agreement with the battery materials company. In response, the company said: "While NOVONIX is disappointed with this decision, it remains focused on its deliveries for Panasonic and PowerCo and continuing to provide samples to 15 current and potential customers for battery and industrial applications." Management advised that the deal fell through after the two parties failed to agree upon the unique battery cell product specifications and milestones for mass production qualification.

Weebit Nano Ltd (ASX: WBT)

The Weebit Nano share price is down 11% to $4.58. This is despite there being no news out of the semiconductor company. However, with its shares still up 155% since this time six months ago, it is possible that some investors have been taking profit off the table on Tuesday. In addition, with a market capitalisation of almost $1.1 billion, and quarterly cash receipts of $7.3 million, investors may think this speculative stock is severely overvalued.

Shares in the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) battery materials and technology company closed yesterday trading for 56.5 cents. In early morning trade on Tuesday, shares plunged to 48 cents, down 15%. After some likely bargain hunting, in later morning trade, shares are swapping hands for 50 cents each, down 11.5%.

For some context, the All Ords is down a modest 0.3% at this same time.

Here's what's got ASX investors reaching for their sell buttons.

Novonix shares tumble on offtake cancellation

In a release shortly before market open today, Novonix reported that Stellantis (via its subsidiary FCA US LLC) has terminated its offtake agreement for synthetic graphite material with the company, effective immediately.

In news that's sending Novonix shares sharply lower today, management stated that the company was unable to agree on the unique battery cell product specifications and milestones for mass production qualification with Stellantis.

On 11 November last year, Novonix announced the signing of the offtake agreement with Stellantis. That agreement was for a minimum of 86,250 tonnes of synthetic graphite material up to a target volume of 115,000 tonnes over what was meant to be a six-year term of the agreement.

The price of the synthetic graphite material was to be set via an agreed-upon market-based price formula, with the final product specifications then to be confirmed at a future date. Novonix and Stellantis have targeted the start of commercial supply for January 1, 2026.

Commenting on the agreement last November, Chris Burns, Novonix CEO at that time, said:

We are excited to have Stellantis' commitment, now as our largest customer, to support their North American EV growth plans. This contract allocates the remainder of our available volumes at our Riverside facility and a portion of volumes to be produced at our planned greenfield facility.

Offtake agreements with high-quality partners such as Stellantis solidify NOVONIX's position as a leader in onshoring the supply chain of synthetic graphite and accelerating the adoption of clean energy.

Today, management said that while they are disappointed with this decision to scrap the offtake agreement, Novonix remains focused on its deliveries for Panasonic and PowerCo. The company is also continuing to provide samples to 15 current and potential customers for battery and industrial applications.

Looking to what could support Novonix shares over the longer term, the company said its Riverside facility, located in the US state of Tennessee, "is poised to become the first large-scale production site dedicated to high-performance synthetic graphite for the battery, defence, and industrial sectors in North America".

Novonix said mass production will commence next year for its lead customer, Panasonic.

In afternoon trade, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is on course to record another decline. At the time of writing, the benchmark index is down 0.15% to 8,913.3 points.

Four ASX shares that are falling more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Coles Group Ltd (ASX: COL)

The Coles share price is down almost 3% to $22.06. This follows the release of the supermarket giant's first quarter sales update. For the 13 weeks to 28 September, Coles reported a 3.9% increase in total group sales to $10.96 billion. This was underpinned by a 4.8% lift in supermarket sales, which comfortably outpaced its key rival Woolworths Group Ltd (ASX: WOW). However, taking some of the shine off the result was a 1.1% decline in liquor sales for the three months.

JB Hi-Fi Ltd (ASX: JBH)

The JB Hi-Fi share price is down 4% to $108.81. Investors have been selling the retail giant's shares following the release of a trading update. For the first quarter, the company reported total sales growth of 6% for the JB Hi-Fi Australia business and total sales growth of 2.5% for The Good Guys business. This growth rate may be softer than some investors were expecting.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down 10% to 60 cents. This has been driven by the release of the battery materials and technology company's quarterly update. For the three months ended 30 September, Novonix recorded an operating cash outflow of US$9.2 million. This left it with a cash balance of $44.7 million at the end of the period.

Wesfarmers Ltd (ASX: WES)

The Wesfarmers share price is down 5% to $87.85. Investors have been selling this conglomerate's shares following the release of its annual general meeting update. Management spoke positively about its performance so far in FY 2026. It said: "Bunnings' year-to-date sales growth is ahead of the growth recorded in the second half of the 2025 financial year, supported by solid trading in the consumer segment." It added that: "Kmart Group is benefiting from the strong value credentials and quality of its Anko product range, with year-to-date sales growth broadly in line with the second half of the 2025 financial year." One negative was the performance of the Industrial and Safety division. Management notes that "trading conditions remain challenging, with earnings impacted by subdued demand across the mining and resources sectors."

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is trading in the green again on Tuesday morning. At the time of writing, the index is 0.51% higher at 9,077.70 points. This is close to its all-time high of 9,097.10 points on Thursday last week.

Thursday's index peak was driven by a flurry of trading activity, particularly in the defence, technology, and rare earths sectors. And now, new data from CommSec reveals the Australian shares that were most traded by its clients last week, highlighting investor sentiment and market momentum.

Most traded Australian shares

CommSec's data shows that Droneshield Ltd (ASX: DRO) was the most traded stock by its clients between 13th October and 17th October.

It's unsurprising that Droneshield shares made the top of the list, given ASX defence stocks are in the spotlight right now. At the time of writing, its share price has soared 11.52% higher for the day. The uptick follows an impressive third-quarter update, with the company an enormous 377.03% higher for the year.

Analysts expect a significant upside over the next 12 months, too. The counter-drone company is expected to build on its revenue growth and expand its sales pipeline.

Next on CommSec's most traded Australian shares list are Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX) and Arafura Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: ARU) shares.

Novonix shares have likely benefited from a spike in interest in battery technology for electric vehicles. Meanwhile, there has been a boom in demand for rare earths and heightened trade tensions between China and the US. This has likely ignited interest in Arafura Rare Earths shares.

Macquarie recently told investors that it expects the rare earths market to remain tight for the remainder of 2025. It also expects a supply deficit for 2026 and 2027.

Investors have been snapping up shares in rare earths producers after China announced plans to restrict the export of rare earths and the US threatened to put 100% tariffs on China.

CommSec clients were also interested in Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: LYC), technology defence manufacturer Electro Optic System Holdings Ltd (ASX: EOS), and Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) shares during the course of the week. Investor confidence in CBA shares was reignited following its annual general meeting (AGM) last week.

Elsewhere, CSL Ltd (ASX: CSL), Treasury Wine Estates Ltd (ASX: TWE), Woodside Energy Group Ltd (ASX: WDS), and Resolution Minerals Ltd (ASX: RML) shares completed the top 10 most traded shares by CommSec clients for the week.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are falling:

Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: LYC)

The Lynas Rare Earths share price is down almost 4% to $20.81. This appears to have been driven by broad weakness in the critical minerals space on Thursday, which could be due to a combination of profit-taking and concerns over the impending meeting between the US and China. If the meeting leads to China easing its export controls on rare earths, then it could put pressure on the prices of these elements.

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Ltd (ASX: EOS)

The EOS share price is down 5% to $5.92. This seems to be another case of profit taking from investors on Thursday. This defence and space company's shares have pulled back materially in recent sessions. As a result, they are now down by a sizeable 30% since this time last week. However, it is worth noting that EOS shares are still smashing the market with a stunning year to date gain. Even after this recent weakness, the company's shares are up over 300% in 2025. This has been driven by some significant counter-drone contracts and the increasingly positive outlook for defence spending globally.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down 22% to 79.5 cents. This may also have been driven by the same reasons mentioned above for Lynas Rare Earths. China is also planning to restrict its graphite exports. This has put a rocket under Novonix shares this month. So much so, they are still up a whopping 80% since this time last month despite today's significant pullback.

Xero Ltd (ASX: XRO)

The Xero share price is down 1% to $155.42. This appears to be down to broad weakness in the tech sector on Thursday, which has offset some good news from the cloud accounting platform provider. Xero revealed that it has completed the acquisition of Melio. It is a leading US based small business bill pay platform that seamlessly enables customers to manage their cashflow by offering easy-to-use accounts payable workflows and a wide choice of payment methods. Xero agreed to pay a total of US$2.5 billion for the acquisition. This is being funded through a combination of cash, debt, and new Xero shares.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index has slipped into the red and is down slightly to 8,984.8 points.

Four ASX shares that are not letting that hold them back are listed below. Here's why they are rising:

DroneShield Ltd (ASX: DRO)

The DroneShield share price is up 3% to $5.85. Investors have been buying this counter drone technology company's shares this month amid optimism that it could be a big winner from plans in Europe. The European Union's Defence Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius, revealed plans to build a "drone wall" along the eastern flank. This will integrate detection, tracking, and interception to counter hostile UAVs. This follows a spate of recent airspace violations.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is up 23% to 58.5 cents. This could be a delayed reaction to news out of the battery materials and technology company last week. Novonix revealed that it achieved a critical milestone after delivering its first mass production, commercial-grade sample of synthetic graphite for industrial applications. Management noted that this delivery was made to one of North America's largest value-added carbon processors with a global market reach. Novonix's CEO, Mike O'Kronley, said: "We're pleased to have hit this significant manufacturing milestone. This demonstrates that industrial-grade products can be produced using NOVONIX's proprietary continuous graphitization furnace technology at a mass production scale and is another step towards bringing our battery-grade materials to market."

Predictive Discovery Ltd (ASX: PDI)

The Predictive Discovery share price is up over 13% to 50 cents. Investors have been buying the gold miner's shares after it announced a merger with Canada's Robex Resources (ASX: RXR). It notes that this creates West Africa's next mid-tier gold producer by combining two of the continent's largest, lowest-cost, and most advanced projects. Predictive Discovery's CEO, Andrew Pardey, said: "By combining two of West Africa's largest and most advanced gold development projects and leveraging the proven track record of both management teams in Africa, we are creating a company that positions Guinea to become one of Africa's top five gold producers. The new, diversified company will not only further de-risk our flagship Bankan Project, but also deliver enduring value for shareholders, the communities where we operate and Guinea as a whole."

Weebit Nano Ltd (ASX: WBT)

The Weebit Nano share price is up 4% to $3.72. This morning, this semiconductor company announced that it has successfully taped-out (released to manufacturing) test chips featuring its embedded ReRAM module at Onsemi's 300mm production fab in New York. Weebit Nano's CEO, Cody Hanoch, said: "Our collaboration with onsemi is progressing rapidly, and this successful tape-out marks a major milestone in completing the technology transfer of Weebit ReRAM to onsemi's advanced BCD process."

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 0.65% to 8,843.6 points.

Four ASX shares that are rising more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are climbing:

Aeris Resources Ltd (ASX: AIS)

The Aeris Resources share price is up 2.5% to 48.7 cents. This follows the release of the copper miner's update on activities at the Golden Plateau deposit. It is located within the company's 100% owned Cracow tenement package in Queensland. Management notes that a large volume of mineralisation has been identified around the historical underground workings, extending down to 150m below the bottom of the existing pit. Executive Chairman, Andre Labuschagne, said "The historical production from the Golden Plateau area highlights the significance of this mineralised system. We are highly encouraged by the potential impact this near-term ore source could have on extending the Cracow life-of-mine plan. Aeris is prioritising exploration at Golden Plateau with the drill program to be completed this financial year."

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Ltd (ASX: EOS)

The EOS share price is up 12% to $9.39. This has been driven by the release of a sales update from the defence and space company today. EOS revealed that it is expecting its full year revenue from existing contracts to be $115 million to $125 million in FY 2025. However, it is pursuing orders that could boost this number by $25 million. In addition, its contract backlog is approximately $299 million. This is $163 million higher than it was at 31 December 2024 and it still has an extensive pipeline of sales opportunities.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is up 16.5% to 49.5 cents. Investors have been buying this battery materials and technology company's shares after it achieved a critical milestone. Novonix announced that it has delivered its first mass production, commercial-grade sample of synthetic graphite for industrial applications.
Synlait Milk Ltd (ASX: SM1)

The Synlait Milk share price is up 15% to 72 cents. This follows the release of the dairy processor's full year results this morning. The company revealed the more than doubling of its underlying EBITDA to NZ$107.2 million in FY 2025. In addition, Synlait Milk has signed an agreement to sell its North Island assets to global healthcare leader Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT). The divestment will deliver the company approximately NZ$307 million in proceeds.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX) shares are starting the week with a bang.

In morning trade, the ASX battery materials and technology stock is up 20% to 51 cents.

This compares favourably to the ASX All Ordinaries index, which is up 0.85% at the time of writing.

Why are Novonix shares shooting higher?

Investors have been fighting to get hold of the ASX stock this morning after responding very positively to the release of a big announcement.

According to the release, Novonix has delivered its first mass production, commercial-grade sample of synthetic graphite for industrial applications. This is to one of North America's largest value-added carbon processors with "a global market reach."

The ASX battery materials stock advised that it provided an industrial-grade mass production sample of specified products for final qualification for use in various industrial applications.

It notes that industrial-grade product qualification is fast and flexible and enables a faster path to market than battery-grade synthetic graphite. Any target supply volumes will be further defined once final product qualification has been completed and a definitive supply agreement has been established.

The company is feeling very positive about its Riverside facility. It notes that the Tennessee-based facility is poised to become the first large-scale production site dedicated to high-performance synthetic graphite for the battery, defence, and industrial sectors in North America.

Mass production is due to start next year for its lead customer, Panasonic.

But it won't be stopping there. To meet increasing customer demand, the ASX battery materials stock has plans for its second synthetic graphite manufacturing plant, also in, Tennessee, known as the Enterprise South location.

Together, these facilities will give Novonix a total production capacity of over 50,000 tonnes per year.

Commenting on the milestone, the company's CEO, Mike O'Kronley, said:

We're pleased to have hit this significant manufacturing milestone. This demonstrates that industrial-grade products can be produced using NOVONIX's proprietary continuous graphitization furnace technology at a mass production scale and is another step towards bringing our battery-grade materials to market.

As we continue to scale our facility, the ability to provide volumes to markets outside the battery space diversifies our product portfolio and provides the opportunity to increase our planned production at Riverside for 2026.

Novonix shareholders will undoubtedly be pleased with today's gain. However, it is worth noting that despite today's big move, its shares are still down 34% since the start of the year and a whopping 95% from their 2021 high.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is down 0.5% to 8,715.7 points.

Four ASX shares that are falling more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

Bapcor Ltd (ASX: BAP)

The Bapcor share price is down 28% to $3.65. Investors have been selling the auto parts retailer's shares following the release of a disappointing trading update. Bapcor revealed that its second half performance was below expectations, particularly in May and June. As a result, sales are expected to be down 1.4% to $1,944.3 million in FY 2025. Things will be much worse for its earnings, with management expecting to report a pro forma net profit after tax of $81 million to $82 million. This is down 13.5% to 14.5% year on year. This time last year, Bapcor rejected a $5.40 cash per share takeover offer from Bain Capital.

Boss Energy Ltd (ASX: BOE)

The Boss Energy share price is down 4% to $3.58. This follows news that the uranium producer's CEO has decided to step down. Duncan Craib informed the Boss Energy board that he will step down as managing director and CEO as of 30 September 2025. He will be replaced by COO, Matt Dusci. The company's chair, Wyatt Buck, said: "Under Duncan's leadership, Boss has generated considerable growth for its shareholders and has transitioned from an exploration and development company to an ASX200 listed company."

Macquarie Group Ltd (ASX: MQG)

The Macquarie Group share price is down almost 5% to $214.55. The catalyst for this has been the release of an underwhelming first quarter update from the investment bank today. Macquarie revealed that its first quarter net profit contribution was down on the prior corresponding period. It notes that this reflects an improved performance in Banking and Financial Services and Macquarie Capital, which was more than offset by lower contributions from Macquarie Asset Management and Commodities and Global Markets.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down 5% to 55.5 cents. This morning, this battery materials technology company announced that it is raising funds through a convertible note offering. Novonix is using up to US$100 million of unsecured convertible debentures via a multi-tranche funding agreement. Management advised that the proceeds will provide additional capital for the continued build-out of its Riverside facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee and for general corporate purposes.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are falling:

Appen Ltd (ASX: APX)

The Appen share price is down 2% to 86.7 cents. Investors have been selling this artificial intelligence data services company's shares following the release of its first quarter update. Appen revealed a 14% decline in revenue to $50.2 million. Though, excluding the loss of a major contract, revenue would have been up 12% year on year. Appen's underlying EBITDA was a loss of $1.5 million, which is a $1.4 million improvement on the loss of $2.9 million a year ago.

Bank of Queensland Ltd (ASX: BOQ)

The Bank of Queensland share price is down 2% to $7.36. This has been driven by the regional bank's shares going ex-dividend this morning. Earlier this month, Bank of Queensland released its half year results and declared an 18 cents per share fully franked interim dividend. This will be paid to eligible shareholders next month on 23 May.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down 4.5% to 43 cents. This morning, this battery materials and technology company released its quarterly update and revealed an operating cash outflow of US$16 million. In other news, Novonix announced an agreement to purchase a 182-acre parcel in the Enterprise South Industrial Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The land will be acquired for approximately US$5 million and serve as the site for its second facility of high-performance synthetic graphite. Interim CEO, Robert Long, stated: "We are thrilled to finalize the agreement for Enterprise South, marking a significant step in our expansion strategy."

Ora Banda Mining Ltd (ASX: OBM)

The Ora Banda share price is down 7% to 98.5 cents. Investors have been selling this gold miner's shares following the release of its quarterly update. Gold sold increased by 6% from the prior quarter to 23,643 ounces, which has taken its total FY 2025 year-to-date gold sold to 71,467 ounces. This is 6% above what was sold during the whole of FY 2024 with one further quarter of production remaining. However, this hasn't stopped management from downgrading its guidance. Its revised production guidance for FY 2025 is 100koz-105koz (previously 100koz-110koz). It has also increased its AISC notably to A$2,350/oz – A$2,500/oz (from A$1,975/oz – A$2,125/oz).

Four ASX shares that are rising more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are climbing:

DroneShield Ltd (ASX: DRO)

The DroneShield share price is up 7% to $1.29. Investors have been buying this counter drone technology company's shares since the release of its quarterly update last week. One broker that was pleased with DroneShield's performance was Bell Potter. In response, it retained its buy rating with an improved price target of $1.50. It said: "We have upgraded our revenue forecasts based on DRO's compelling performance YTD and a diversified sales pipeline of $1.6b. Additionally, we have increased our operating expenses as we get better visibility on the growing cost base following the company's conscious effort to scale up its operations."

Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: LYC)

The Lynas Rare Earths share price is up 2% to $8.43. This follows the release of the rare earths producer's quarterly update. For the three months ended 31 March, Lynas reported sales revenue of $123 million and sales receipts of $124.6 million. This was an increase of 21.5% and 15.7%, respectively, over the prior corresponding period.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is up 7% to 47 cents. This morning, this battery materials and technology company announced the appointment of its new CEO. Michael O'Kronley will become Novonix's leader on 19 May. The company notes that with a strong technical foundation in engineering, O'Kronley brings over 30 years of automotive experience. This includes 15 years in the lithium-ion battery and battery materials space. Most recently, he served as CEO of Ascend Elements, where he increased the enterprise value of the company by US$1.6 billion in five years.

Orthocell Ltd (ASX: OCC)

The Orthocell share price is up 4.5% to $1.35. The catalyst for this was news that the regenerative medicine company has received a license from the FDA of Thailand for its flagship nerve repair product Remplir. According to the release, the license paves the way for the commercial distribution of Remplir into Thailand, which has a high quality, well-developed healthcare system, boosted by a strong medical tourism sector. The Thai nerve repair market has an estimated value of US$84 million. Remplir is a collagen wrap used in nerve repair surgery to assist surgeons to improve outcomes in the repair and regeneration of damaged nerves.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 0.4% to 8,381.8 points.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are falling:

Brazilian Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: BRE)

The Brazilian Rare Earths share price is down 5% to $2.28. This follows the release of a drilling update from the Monte Alto project. Although the company reported record rare earths grades, it appears to have fallen short of what some investors were expecting. The company's CEO and Managing Director, Bernardo da Veiga, was pleased with the results. He said: "Less than a year ago, we announced the first drill 'discovery' of ultra-high-grade REE-Nb-Sc-Ta-U mineralisation at Monte Alto. Today, we are pleased to report new drilling results that include some of the highest grades ever reported globally, including exceptional rare earths grades of up to 45.7% TREO. These outstanding drilling results confirm Monte Alto's position as one of the highest grade rare earths and critical minerals projects in the world."

Carnarvon Energy Ltd (ASX: CVN)

The Carnarvon Energy share price is down 23% to 12 cents. This morning, this energy explorer released an update on the Dorado Phase 1 liquids development, offshore Western Australia. According to the release, the Dorado joint venture operator has decided not to purchase the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel that had been identified as an option for the Dorado Phase 1 liquids development project. The Operator has also decided to not enter Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) at this stage.

Computershare Ltd (ASX: CPU)

The Computershare share price is down 2% to $33.48. This appears to have been driven by a broker note out of Citi. According to the note, the broker has downgraded the stock transfer company's shares to a neutral rating with an improved price target of $35.00. It made the move on valuation grounds. Analysts at Morgans made a similar move on Monday, downgrading its shares to hold rating with a $34.43 price target.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down 6% to 61 cents. This morning, this battery materials and technology company shocked investors by announcing the sudden exit of its CEO. According to the release, Dr. Chris Burns is stepping down as CEO at the end of the week on 24 January and will be replaced by CFO Robert Long on an interim basis. Commenting on the exit, Novonix Chairman, Admiral Robert J Natter, said: "The Board of Directors would like to thank Dr. Burns for his exceptional leadership and dedication in what has been a dynamic market environment. The Board has great confidence in Mr Long's ability to continue this strong leadership during the transition period."

The Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX) share price is having a tough time on Tuesday.

In morning trade, the battery materials and technology company's shares are down 10% to 58.5 cents.

Why is the Novonix share price being sold off?

The catalyst for today's selling has been shock news that the company's CEO has decided to step down.

According to the release, Dr. Chris Burns is stepping down as CEO at the end of the week on 24 January.

Though, he will continue to support Novonix in an advisory capacity, serving as special advisor to the board of directors. This is in order to provide continuity, support ongoing operations of the company, and ensure a smooth transition.

Often when a CEO leaves with such short notice, it is because a successor has already been lined up. However, that is not the case with Novonix, which appears to have sparked concerns. Especially at such an important juncture. The company plans to begin production from its Riverside in Tennessee facility this year.

Novonix advised that its board has commenced a search for a new CEO who will be based at its headquarters in Chattanooga. They want the candidate to have experience in manufacturing, operations and scale-up to lead it into the planned growth in synthetic graphite production over the coming years.

Commenting on his exit, Dr. Chris Burns, said:

I am incredibly proud of everything that NOVONIX has accomplished during my time as CEO. We have developed innovative technology, new products, and have gained significant support from the US Government, investors and customers as we have established ourselves as a leader in the battery materials sector in North America.

As we move towards commercial scale production at Riverside this year, it is a great opportunity for the Board to appoint a new CEO with the right skill set to lead the Company on the next phase of its journey. I look forward to working with the Board and management through this process to support the continued success of NOVONIX.

The company's CFO Robert Long has been appointed as interim CEO until a permanent CEO is found. He will work closely with the board to ensure a smooth transition and maintain momentum and focus on key strategic

Speaking about the news, Novonix Chairman, Admiral Robert J Natter, said:

The Board of Directors would like to thank Dr. Burns for his exceptional leadership and dedication in what has been a dynamic market environment. The Board has great confidence in Mr Long's ability to continue this strong leadership during the transition period.

The Novonix share price is now down 22% in 2025.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX) shares are having a good session on Wednesday.

At one stage, the battery materials and technology company's shares were up as much as 4.5% to 69.5 cents.

They have since pulled back a touch but remain up over 2% to 68 cents at the time of writing.

This compares favourably to the ASX 200 index, which has just slipped into the red.

Why are Novonix shares outperforming?

Investors have been bidding the company's shares higher today after responding positively to an announcement this morning.

According to the release, the company has shored up its balance sheet by accepting significantly more applications for its share purchase plan (SPP) than expected.

As a reminder, Novonix's SPP was priced at 60 cents per new share, and eligible shareholders were given the opportunity to apply for up to $30,000 worth of shares.

Novonix revealed that it received valid applications from eligible shareholders for 68.6 million fully paid ordinary Novonix shares to raise a total of $41.2 million (before costs) under the SPP.

Management notes that this means that that SPP was heavily oversubscribed well in excess of the $5 million target that was initially announced by the company.

And while not all valid applications will be filled in full, it is getting pretty close to doing so.

It advised that given the strong support shown by eligible shareholders and in accordance with the terms of the SPP, Novonix has allowed a greater level of participation by eligible shareholders. It has increased the size of the offer by $27.3 million above its original target of $5 million,

This means that the SPP is pulling in a total amount of $32.3 million before costs. This gives its balance sheet a big boost ahead of some big spending.

Why is it raising funds?

Novonix advised that it will use the proceeds from the SPP to purchase, install, and commission additional equipment in its Riverside facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

This equipment will be used to support the further qualification of products for the company's contracts with Panasonic, Stellantis, and PowerCo.

Commenting on the SPP, Novonix's chairman Admiral Robert Natter, said:

We were pleased to provide all of our eligible shareholders with the opportunity to participate in this offer. We received strong interest in the offer, allowing us to increase its size to $32.3 million. We thank our shareholders for their ongoing support of NOVONIX and its future.

Novonix shares are up almost 5% over the past 12 months.

In morning trade, the battery materials and technology company's shares are up almost 3.5% to 75.5 cents.

What's going on with the Novonix share price today?

Investors have been buying the company's shares after it announced that it has entered into a licensing agreement with its long-time technology partner, Harper International Corporation.

Harper International describes itself as a global leader in complete thermal processing solutions and technical services essential for the production of advanced materials.

According to the release, the two parties have signed an agreement for the rights and use of Harper International's continuous, induction-based graphitisation furnace technology.

The release notes that four years ago, Novonix and Harper International announced a strategic partnership to develop innovative graphitisation furnace technology to be used to produce synthetic graphite anode material for the lithium-ion battery sector.

This partnership provided for commitments from Novonix to purchase from Harper International, and from Harper International to develop and exclusively supply Novonix with proprietary systems for thermal processing material for the battery anode market.

What else?

Novonix advised that the licensing agreement also provides it with the right to an exclusive license to Harper International's technology on which its continuous graphitisation furnaces operate.

Upon making an initial payment within 12 months of the effective date of the agreement, the company will have the exclusive license to use the technology to further develop the furnaces used for the thermal production of graphite material for use in the battery anode market.

And upon equipment meeting certain performance objectives, and Novonix's payment of additional licensing fees, the license will then expand to include its right to build equipment using the licensed technology. This is either internally or through other permitted sublicensees.

Harper International's technology certainly could come in handy at Novonix's Riverside facility, which is located in Tennessee, United States.

It is poised to become the first large-scale production site dedicated to high-performance synthetic graphite for the battery sector in North America. The company advised that it is targeting the commencement of commercial production later this year and has plans to grow its output to 20,000 tonnes per annum to meet current customer commitments.

The Novonix share price is now up approximately 15% since this time last year. Though, it remains down heavily on a two-year basis.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is down a further 1.1% to 8,079.7 points.

Four ASX shares that are not letting that hold them back are listed below. Here's why they are rising:

HMC Capital Ltd (ASX: HMC)

The HMC Capital share price is up 3% to $9.94. Investors have been buying this alternative investment company's shares following the release of a bullish broker note out of Bell Potter. According to the note, the broker has upgraded HMC Capital's shares to a buy rating with an improved price target of $13.50. It said: "We think the share price pull-back provides an attractive entry point as the platform is reaching a scale and breadth sweet spot juncture which could see fee-earning capability increase further yet, and screens inexpensively vs. key global alternative AM and real estate fund manager peers."

Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR)

The Karoon Energy share price is up 2.5% to $1.26. Investors appear to believe that this energy producer's shares have been oversold this week. This follows news that energy producer has downgraded its full year guidance after being forced to shut down production from the Baúna Project. The company now expects Baúna production of 7.2 million barrels to 7.4 million barrels of oil (down from 7.5 million barrels to 7.7 million barrels).

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is up 4% to 63.5 cents. This is despite there being no news out of the battery materials and technology company. Though, it is worth noting that yesterday the company revealed that it is participating in the American Active Anode Material Producers' (AAAMP) petition to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission. This is to investigate whether China is exporting natural and synthetic graphite used to make lithium-ion battery anode material at unfair prices to the United States.

Ventia Services Group Ltd (ASX: VNT)

The Ventia Services share price is up over 2% to $3.53. This follows news that the essential infrastructure services provider has signed a major expansion to its longstanding partnership with Telstra Group Ltd (ASX: TLS). Ventia Services has signed a five-year agreement to optimise the delivery of design, construct and maintenance of Telstra's critical digital infrastructure. It notes that the strategic partnership is expected to generate over $400 million in annual revenue over the next five years.

Four ASX shares that are rising more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are climbing:

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is up over 6% to 62.5 cents. This follows news that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has conditionally committed a direct loan of up to US$754.8 million (~A$1.2 billion) to be applied towards partially financing a proposed new facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Novonix's CEO, Dr. Chris Burns, said: "This announcement is the culmination of years of hard work and is another critical milestone for our anode materials business towards our target production of 150,000 tpa in North America. This conditional commitment from the government to invest in our new facility continues to underscore the focus on localizing critical materials in the battery supply chain, such as graphite."

PEXA Group Ltd (ASX: PXA)

The PEXA share price is up 9% to $13.47. This morning, this digital property exchange and data insights company announced the appointment of its new CEO. PEXA has appointed Russell Cohen as its new leader effective from 31 March 2025. Mr Cohen is currently the group managing director of operations at multinational technology company Grab. At Grab he leads business performance, operations, platform safety, market expansion, and a team of 3000 across seven countries. Cohen has also played a pivotal role in that company's strategic growth throughout the region.

Tamboran Resources Corp (ASX: TBN)

The Tamboran Resources share price is up almost 8% to 14 cents. This follows news that the natural gas company has signed an agreement with APA Group (ASX: APA) to deliver the Sturt Plateau Pipeline. CEO Joel Riddle said: "With natural gas serving as the largest source of electricity generation in the Northern Territory, Tamboran is proud to play a critical leading role in ensuring a reliable energy supply for Territorians – keeping the lights on and air conditioners running. In delivering this, we are committed to following the highest environmental standards and with the support of Native Title Holders."

Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX: WGX)

The Westgold Resources share price is up 4% to $3.14. Investors have been buying this gold miner's shares following the release of an update on the potential expansion of the Fortnum Gold Operation in the Murchison Region of Western Australia. A scoping study has identified a potential 10-year fully integrated mine plan at Fortnum.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX) shares are rocketing out of the gates on Tuesday morning.

At the time of writing, the battery materials and technology company's shares are up 16% to 68 cents.

Why are Novonix shares rocketing?

Investors have been buying the company's shares this morning after it made a major announcement.

According to the release, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has conditionally committed a direct loan of up to US$754.8 million (~A$1.2 billion) to be applied towards partially financing a proposed new facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The release notes that the proposed financing is being offered under the DOE Loan Programs Office's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program.

The Chattanooga facility will manufacture synthetic graphite primarily for use in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. At full capacity, the new facility is expected to produce approximately 31,500 tonnes per annum (tpa) of synthetic graphite. This can support the production of lithium-ion batteries for approximately 325,000 EVs each year.

Management highlights that China currently has over 95% market share for battery grade graphite. The new facility is expected to reach full production capacity by the end of 2028 and is anticipated to create 450 full-time operational jobs and 500 construction jobs.

'Another critical milestone'

Novonix's CEO, Dr. Chris Burns, was very pleased with the news, highlighting that it is another major milestone. He said:

This announcement is the culmination of years of hard work and is another critical milestone for our anode materials business towards our target production of 150,000 tpa in North America. This conditional commitment from the government to invest in our new facility continues to underscore the focus on localizing critical materials in the battery supply chain, such as graphite.

Recent announcements from China to further scrutinize the export of battery-grade graphite to the United States highlight the importance of domestic production of high-performance, battery-grade synthetic graphite. Our offtake agreements with strong partners have strengthened our leadership in onshoring the synthetic graphite supply chain in North America and supporting the path towards U.S. energy independence.

What's next?

As mentioned at the top, this funding is conditional. The release notes that the DOE must complete an environmental review, and the company must satisfy certain technical, commercial, legal, environmental, and financial conditions before the DOE can decide whether to enter into definitive financing documents and fund the loan.

A binding loan agreement from DOE will also be subject to the satisfactory completion of due diligence by DOE, satisfaction of conditions precedent specified in the term sheet, approval of the Novonix board, receipt of required governmental and third-party consents, and the negotiation and execution of binding loan documents.

Four ASX shares that have failed to follow the market higher today are listed below. Here's why they are falling:

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corp Ltd (ASX: FPH)

The Fisher & Paykel Healthcare share price is down 1.5% to $34.07. Investors have been selling the medical device company's shares following the release of its half year results. Although Fisher & Paykel Healthcare delivered very strong profit growth over the prior corresponding period, management only reaffirmed its guidance for the full year. It seems that the market was betting on the company upgrading its guidance for FY 2025.

Humm Group Ltd (ASX: HUM)

The Humm Group share price is down 17% to 64.5 cents. This follows the release of the financial services company's annual general meeting update. Investors appear to believe that a weak result is coming in FY 2025 based on what management is saying. It said: "Consumers and SME businesses in Australia and New Zealand continue to be affected by inflation and cost of living pressures, with geo-political pressures hanging over the global economy."

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down a further 6.5% to 70.5 cents. This battery materials technology company's shares have come under pressure this week following the completion of its institutional placement. Novonix raised $44.4 million through a fully underwritten placement to institutional and sophisticated investors at an offer price of 60 cents per new share. This represented a sizeable discount of approximately 38% to the prevailing share price. Management said: "This funding will be used to achieve 3,000 tonnes per annum of production capacity at our Riverside facility in 2025 and enable continued access of our Department of Energy's Office of Manufacturing & Energy Supply Chains grant of up to US$100 million."

Webjet Group (ASX: WJL)

The Webjet share price is down 4% to 81 cents. This has been driven by news that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has commenced Federal Court proceedings against it. It is accusing Webjet of deceptive practices regarding airfare pricing and flight bookings. The ACCC said: "The statements included 'flights from $x' when the price quoted excluded Webjet's compulsory 'Webjet servicing fee' and 'booking price guarantee' fee which ranged from $34.90 to $54.90 per booking, depending on whether the flights were domestic, NZ/Pacific flights or other international flights."
