Best and worst stocks on the ASX today

The market has finished the day higher.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has added to yesterday’s gains, posting a rise of 0.21% today. The gains followed another strong session on Wall Street overnight which saw the Dow Jones up 0.55%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.72%.

Investors now appear more confident, both here and abroad, that the Ukrainian situation will be contained.

Sectors were mixed, with consumer staples, followed by consumer discretionary leading the gains. Materials, property and telecommunication services all fell.

Here are the top five best performing stocks in the index today.

These stocks were the losers on the day.

  • Energy World Corporation Ltd. (ASX: EWC) lost 5% to 28.5 cents
  • PanAust Limited (ASX: PNA) dropped 3.9% to $1.60
  • Sigma Pharmaceutical Limited (ASX: SIP) declined 3.8% to 64 cents
  • Reject Shop Ltd (ASX: TRS) fell 3.3% to $9.37
  • NRW Holdings Limited (ASX: NWH) slipped 3.2% to $1.06
