Best and worst stocks on the ASX today

The S&P / ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has continued on its merry way, hitting its highest level since June 2008. The index rose 0.6% to 5,351.8, while on a sector basis, Metals & Mining, Materials and Consumer Staples all posted 1% plus gains.

Here are the top five best performing stocks in the index today.

These stocks were the losers on the day.

  • Qantas Airways (ASX: QAN) fell 5.6% to $1.35
  • Energy World Corporation (ASX: EWC) dropped 4.2% to 45.5 cents
  • Ten Network Holdings (ASX: TEN) slipped 3.6% to 27 cents
  • Silver Lake Resources (ASX: SLR) lost 2.9% to 68 cents
  • PanAust (ASX :PNA) closed down 2.7% at $1.975
