On an absolute bloodbath of a day for the S&P/ASX 200 Index, long suffering Santos Ltd (ASX: STO) were dealt yet another hammer-blow, its shares closing at $5.00.

According to data from S&P Capital IQ, the last time Santos shares traded at this level was back in June 2000.

With the oil price now sliding below US$40 — for the first time in six years — there could be yet more pain ahead for Santos shareholders.
