The Sunrise Energy Metals Ltd (ASX: SRL) share price was in focus today after the company announced a conditional commitment from the U.S. Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital for up to US$400 million in long-term debt funding, and revealed plans to pursue a U.S. securities exchange listing.

What did Sunrise Energy Metals report?

  • Secured conditional commitment for up to US$400 million (A$570 million) in 25-year debt financing for the Syerston Scandium Project.
  • Proposed U.S. government funding aims to reduce development and funding risk substantially.
  • Announced intention to pursue a U.S. listing to access global investment markets, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.
  • Revised capital estimate for the Syerston project at A$450–475 million (US$315–333 million) due to expanded scope and updated costs.
  • Initial development designed to produce 60 tonnes per annum of high-purity scandium oxide over an estimated 32-year mine life.

What else do investors need to know?

The Syerston Scandium Project is positioned as one of the world's largest and highest-grade scandium resources, with its initial build aimed at establishing a reliable Western supply of the critical mineral. Sunrise's revised project scope now includes construction of downstream refining capacity in the U.S. and expanded production options, potentially tripling output in the future.

Project funding will progress in phases, subject to the achievement of milestones, equity contributions, and offtake agreements. The proposed loan gives Sunrise flexibility to align capital deployment with development needs as it moves toward a final investment decision in the second half of 2026. Early works and procurement activities have already commenced to target first production in late 2028.

What did Sunrise Energy Metals management say?

Chairman Robert Friedland said:

This is a landmark moment for Sunrise and Australia's mining industry, and the financing aligns with the goals of the U.S.-Australia Partnership on critical minerals. The world has entered an era in which access to critical minerals will shape industrial strength, technology leadership and national security. Scandium is one of the clearest examples, supporting the technologies, industries and defence capabilities that will shape the coming decades. We thank President Donald J. Trump and the Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital for its support as we aim to establish Syerston as a cornerstone of Western scandium supply.

What's next for Sunrise Energy Metals?

Sunrise plans to finalise capital estimates and secure all necessary approvals for project financing and the U.S. listing throughout 2026. The company is advancing procurement and engineering for the Syerston Project, aiming for a board recommendation on a final investment decision later this year.

Looking long-term, Sunrise is positioning itself as the main Western source for scandium, serving defence, AI infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing sectors. Further project expansion could lift annual production to 180 tonnes, supporting robust supply and enhanced global market access.
