What did Omega Oil & Gas report?

  • Canyon-3 drilling is progressing on schedule at 2,570 metres, targeting the Permian section at about 3,200 metres.
  • This is the first well in Omega's fully funded 2026/27 appraisal campaign in the eastern Taroom Trough.
  • The well is targeting laterally extensive oil and gas reservoirs, with total depth expected at around 3,900 metres.
  • Results are expected to help confirm the scale and quality of what could be a major new Australian oil and gas province.
  • Previous drilling in the area has confirmed multiple stacked oil and gas-bearing intervals.

What else do investors need to know?

Omega's Canyon-3 well is located 10 kilometres southeast of Canyon-1/1H and is designed to test the updip hydrocarbon potential of the eastern Taroom Trough. This appraisal is part of a broader program aiming to rapidly define one of the largest new potential oil and gas discoveries in Australia in decades.

The company's focus on the eastern flank targets overpressured Permian sandstone reservoirs, which offer greater consistency compared to the western basin. Omega is keen to prove the regional extent of these reservoirs, potentially supporting a significant development inventory and contributing to energy and liquid fuel security for Australia.

What did Omega Oil & Gas management say?

CEO and Managing Director Trevor Brown said:

Momentum is building as Omega advances our continuous, multi-well drilling program designed to define the scale and quality of the eastern Taroom Trough oil and gas province. It's exciting to see Canyon-3 progressing rapidly towards our primary target, the highly prospective Canyon Sandstone. The well is on schedule, and results are expected within two weeks. Canyon-3 provides a valuable test of the hydrocarbon content and reservoir quality updip from Canyon-1, and is an important data point to demonstrate the extent of this exciting, new oil and gas province. Well results will provide valuable data to help advance this new source of energy and liquid fuel security for Australia. With our continuous, multi-well drilling program now underway, and with first results expected within weeks, I look forward to keeping shareholders updated as we receive results from each well in our exciting program.

What's next for Omega Oil & Gas?

Omega expects first results from Canyon-3 within two weeks, which should offer valuable insights into the extent and quality of the Permian reservoirs. Integration of these drill results with data from earlier wells and seismic studies will help to confirm whether this area supports further commercial drilling.

If successful, the program could see a substantial scale-up of activity in the Taroom Trough, with modelling suggesting the potential for dozens of development wells over an area of roughly 200km². Omega remains focused on progressing its campaign to bring new domestic energy sources to market.
