What: The Fairfax press has reported on the recent Wesfarmers Ltd (ASX: WES) management retreat which brings together 200 of the most senior members of the wide reaching conglomerate's businesses.
So What: There has been speculation that an overseas acquisition could be under consideration. With Wesfarmers making a number of appointments to its management team with experience overseas, according to the Fairfax article, this talent is now being used to assess offshore opportunities. CEO Richard Goyder reportedly stated that they are: "Looking at a lot of opportunities at the moment to leverage food…we are probably the second biggest aggregator of food in Australia so there is an opportunity to look at that in new markets…it doesn't have to be in retail it could be more direct."
What now: While it is of course just speculation as to what form of growth path Wesfarmers' management may ultimately take the firm on, the possibility that the group could return to its original roots and leverage Australia's status as 'the food bowl of Asia' is an exciting one.
