About Sezzle
Sezzle Inc. (ASX: SZL) is a buy now, pay later (BNPL) company originating in the United States. It operates like many other BNPL businesses, allowing customers to split payment for their in-store or online purchases into four instalments paid over six weeks, with only the first payment due at the time of purchase.
Sezzle was listed in Australia in July 2019. In February 2022, Sezzle entered into a binding agreement to be acquired by Australian BNPL company Zip Co (ASX: ZIP). By July 2022, both parties agreed not to pursue the scrip-based merger amid deteriorating market conditions.
BNPL players are facing uncertain times in Australia with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) supporting more stringent regulations for BNPL companies. This may require them to conduct the same credit checks on customers as credit card providers.
