About AGL Energy Limited (ASX: AGL)
AGL Energy Limited (ASX: AGL) is one of the most well-known energy providers in Australia. Since being established as Australia’s first gas company in 1837 and lighting the first gas street lamp in Sydney in 1841, AGL has been at the forefront of Australian energy for more than 180 years.
AGL operates Australia’s largest electricity generation portfolio, which accounts for approximately 20% of the total generation capacity in the Australian electricity market. AGL is a major participant in the gas and electricity wholesale markets, providing energy to 3.7 million customers. Additionally, AGL is the largest ASX-listed investor in renewable energy.
AGL’s journey began as Australian Gas Light (hence the name AGL) in 1837. In 1871, it was the second company to list on the then Sydney Stock Exchange. However, AGL has only been listed on the ASX in its current structure since 2006, following its merger and subsequent demerger with Alinta Energy. Over the years, AGL shares have delivered shareholders with growing dividends and capital growth.
