As at market open on 2 January, the stocks have surged 118%, 134% and 153%.

And it's a nicely diversified selection of stocks we're talking about here too.

So, which ASX shares would have more than doubled your investment already in 2025?

I'm glad you asked!

Three top ASX shares to own in 2025

The first ASX share I wish I'd bought at market open on 2 January – but didn't – is 3D geospatial data technology company Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP).

Pointerra shares closed on Thursday (the last trading day of the week due to the Anzac Day holiday) at 8.7 cents apiece. That brings the Pointerra share price up a welcome 117.5% so far in 2025.

The ASX small-cap stock owes most of its outperformance this year to its strong quarterly results, released on 20 January.

Investors sent the share price rocketing 46% on the day, after Pointerra reported record cash receipts for the three months of $4.24 million. This brought the company's half-year cash receipts to $7.3 million, exceeding the $6.8 million it achieved across the full 2024 financial year.

Moving on to the second ASX share that would have more than doubled your money already in 2025, discount retailer The Reject Shop Ltd (ASX: TRS).

Reject Shop shares closed on Thursday changing hands for $6.50 each. That sees the share price up an impressive 133.8% year to date.

The lion's share of those gains was delivered on 27 March, when the Reject Shop share price surged 109.5%.

That huge single-day gain was spurred by news that management had accepted a takeover offer from Canadian value retailing giant Dollarama Inc. (TSX: DOL).

As the Motley Fool's James Mickleboro reported on the day, "The two parties have agreed a price of $6.68 cash per share, which represents a 112% premium to its last closing share price of $3.15 per share."

Which brings us to the third ASX share that's more than doubled investors' money this year, S&P/ASX 300 Index (ASX: XKO) gold miner Catalyst Metals Ltd (ASX: CYL).

Catalyst Metals' shares closed Thursday trading for $6.56 each. That puts the share price up a whopping 152.3% in 2025. And remember the ASX 300 is down 2.8% over this same time.

There have been a number of, erm, catalysts helping boost the Catalyst Metals share price this year.

First, the gold price has surged from US$2,265 per ounce at the start of the year to US$3,328 per ounce on Thursday afternoon, a gain of 46.9%.

Second, the gold miner's strong performance in 2024 saw its market cap rise to the point where it was added to the ASX 300 on 24 March as part of the S&P Dow Jones Indices quarterly rebalance. This opens the door to more fund managers to buy the stock, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking the ASX 300 will now have to hold a proportionate number of shares.

The ASX share was also boosted in March after reporting it was selling its non-core Henty Gold Mine to Kaiser Reef Ltd (ASX: KAU).

And to give you an idea of the miner's strong operational performance, for the half year to 31 December, Catalyst Metals reported net profit after tax of $46 million, up 783% compared to the prior half year.

The miner sold 58,435 ounces of gold during the half year at a realised average price of AU$3,830 per ounce.

Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) shares have been getting a lot of attention on Tuesday.

At one stage today, the ASX small cap was up 32% to a 52-week high of 9.6 cents.

This meant that the technology company's shares were up a remarkable 92% in just two days.

Why is this ASX small cap rocketing?

The driver of these gains has been the release of the company's quarterly update on Monday.

Pointerra revealed that it achieved record cash receipts of $4.24 million during the three months ended 31 December. This contributed to a net cash inflow from operating activities of $1.45 million for the quarter.

For the half year, the ASX small cap reported cash receipts of $7.3 million, which is more than the cash receipts of $6.8 million that it achieved in the whole of FY 2024.

Management advised that this was driven by delivery efficiencies in material contracts and existing customer renewals. The good news is that US customer programs are expected to continue contributing during the balance of FY 2025 and beyond.

What is Pointerra?

Pointerra describes itself as a global geospatial technology company that is aiming to change the way people use remote sensing and design data to build digital twins and manage the physical world.

Its Pointerra3D platform uses AI-driven algorithms and scalable cloud processing to rapidly convert massive 3D datasets into analytics and insights that provide definitive answers to physical asset management questions.

The company notes that the speed, smarts, scale, and on-demand accessibility in the platform's cloud-based common data environment delivers safety improvements, efficiencies, cost savings, and risk mitigation that have never been seen in this sector.

Clearly judging by the ASX small cap's cash receipts, an increasing number of end users are finding the platform useful.

One of those is the US Department of Energy (DOE), which earlier this month awarded Pointerra a US$2 million contract extension. This relates to its existing program modelling a range of electric grid resilience investment scenarios by electric utilities.

Under a hurricane impact analysis program, Pointerra will use 2D and 3D data to generate digital twins of electric utility grids in hurricane affected areas.

It will then develop a change detection model that demonstrates impacts from recent hurricanes on the assets of the grid in the affected areas, provide an overall analysis of hurricane impacts on the grid assets, and compile results and methodologies in a report demonstrating best practices that can be implemented.

Four ASX shares that are falling more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are dropping:

BHP Group Ltd (ASX: BHP)

The BHP Group share price is down almost 2% to $44.27. This has been driven largely by significant weakness in the mining sector today. In addition, the Big Australian pulled the plug on its proposed takeover of Anglo American (LSE: AAL) overnight after being refused an extension to its deadline for making a firm offer. Anglo American stated: "BHP has not addressed the Board's fundamental concerns relating to the disproportionate execution risk associated with the proposed structure and the value that would ultimately be delivered to Anglo American's shareholders."

GR Engineering Services Ltd (ASX: GNG)

The GR Engineering Services share price is down 4% to $2.09. This follows the release of a guidance update from the engineering services company this morning. Management advised that it now expects FY 2024 revenue in the range of $415 million to $430 million. This is down from its previous guidance range of $500 million to $530 million. The reduction in revenue guidance reflects delays in expected contract awards. One positive is that the company's EBITDA is still expected to be higher year on year and in the range of $50 million to $51 million in FY 2024. This is up from $44.4 million in FY 2023.

Novonix Ltd (ASX: NVX)

The Novonix share price is down almost 3% to 70 cents. This has been driven by broad weakness in the battery materials industry on Thursday after a poor night for peers on Wall Street. This has offset the release of a positive update on the company's Riverside facility. Novonix revealed that when the Riverside facility reaches its targeted capacity of 20,000 tpa, it expects to be achieving operating margins in the range of 23% to 30%. This excludes any benefits from Section 301 tariffs.

Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP)

The Pointerra share price is down 5% to 3.6 cents. This morning, this technology company announced that it has received firm commitments from existing and new institutional, professional and sophisticated investors for a $2.05 million placement. These funds are being raised at a discount of 3.3 cents per new share. The proceeds will be used to advance the company's strategic objectives for FY 2025.

Four small ASX shares are giving investors a very happy start to 2024.

At Monday's close, less than five trading days into the New Year, all of these ASX shares had already gained more than 20% since the opening bell on 2 January.

To put that in some context, the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is down 1.95% over that same period.

Though take note, most of these companies are quite small, and investing in microcap stocks comes with added risks, including significant volatility.

So, which ASX shares are shooting the lights out?

I'm glad you asked!

Four ASX shares rocketing higher in the New Year

Starting with the 'laggard', we have 3D geospatial data technology company Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP).

The Pointerra share price is up 22.73% so far in 2024, closing yesterday trading for 5.4 cents per share.

There have been no price-sensitive releases from this ASX share since the company's quarterly update on 31 October. But it's worth noting that even with this year's big boost, the Pointerra share price is still down 71.58% over 12 months.

So perhaps we're seeing some bargain hunting here.

Next up, we have Cooper Energy Ltd (ASX: COE).

The ASX All Ords energy stock is up 23.08% in 2024, with shares swapping hands for 16 cents apiece at Monday's close.

Investor enthusiasm for the ASX share looks to have gotten a lift on Friday when the company reported strong results from its Orbost gas processing plant improvement project.

Cooper Energy said that the production rate at its plant reached record levels of 67.3 terajoules per day (TJ/d). Management also said there were numerous occasions over the past two weeks where instantaneous rates exceeded the plant's nameplate capacity of 68 TJ/d.

The Cooper Energy share price closed up 10.3% on the day.

Which brings us to ASX healthcare stock Medical Developments International Ltd (ASX: MVP).

The Medical Developments share price is up 32.24% in 2024, with shares closing yesterday trading for $1.05 apiece.

As with Pointerra, it's been a long time since this ASX share released any price-sensitive announcements. In this case, all the way back on 31 August when the company released its full-year financial results.

But with the Medical Developments share price having sunk 49% in 2023, investors may also be looking for potential bargains here.

Rounding out the list, up 19.35% gain so far in 2024, is telehealth company Doctor Care Anywhere Group PLC (ASX: DOC), closing Monday trading for 7.4 cents per share.

That sees this microcap ASX share up 42.31% over the past 12 months.

Investor enthusiasm looks to have gotten a boost on Thursday following the company's extraordinary general meeting (EGM).

This saw management announce the refinancing of its debt obligations. They noted the refinancing "frees up the company's resources to be invested in the operations and growth of the business".

The ASX share closed up 15.2% on Thursday and gained another 10.5% on Friday.

And with reporting season kicking off, there were a lot more than five companies that helped define the past week's trading.

But, as that would exceed the scope of this article, here are the five ASX shares that really grabbed my attention since the opening bell sounded on Monday.

Three ASX shares facing headwinds this week

First up, and in no particular order, we have Rio Tinto Ltd (ASX: RIO).

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) mining giant reported its half-year results after market close on Wednesday.

The ASX share closed down 2.5% on Thursday as investors digested a drop in earnings.

Rio Tinto reported that lower commodity prices offset the production growth it achieved over the six months. The miner's performance was also impacted by higher costs.

Among the key metrics, revenue of US$26.7 billion was down 10% year on year. And net profit after tax declined by 43% to US$5.1 billion. This saw management slash the fully franked interim dividend by 33% to US$1.77 per share.

Another large-cap ASX share making the list this week is Macquarie Group Ltd (ASX: MQG).

The ASX 200 financial stock released a first-quarter update on Thursday ahead of its annual general meeting.

The Macquarie share price ended the day down 4.4% after the company reported on weaker trading conditions over the quarter. This saw the net profit contributions from its operating groups "substantially down" year on year.

The third ASX share facing headwinds this week was Bubs Australia Ltd (ASX: BUB).

The Bubs share price closed down a precipitous 13% on Thursday after the infant formula company reported on the results of proxy voting ahead of its extraordinary general meeting.

Ongoing ructions among dissident shareholders and the sitting board saw shareholders voting on whether to remove directors and appoint their own. Some 62% of the proxy votes were against seven proposed resolutions from dissident shareholders.

As for the big daily drop that ensued for this ASX share, Motley Fool analyst James Mickleboro said, "It wouldn't be surprising if these shareholders or their supporters have been selling their shares today, putting pressure on the Bubs share price."

Which brings us to…

Two stocks flying higher

There was plenty of green flashing for ASX shares over the week as well.

Among them, ASX 200 tech stock, Megaport Ltd (ASX: MP1).

The Megaport share price closed up 14% on Thursday on the back of a strong quarterly update.

Among the highlights, the tech company reported on revenue growth and a strong net cash flow over the period.

The ASX share achieved normalised earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) of $11.8 million over the quarter. On the heels of reporting its first net cash positive quarter, Megaport said it now expects to be net cash positive for FY24.

Rounding off the list of ASX shares that defined the week is a much smaller tech stock, Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP).

The 3D geospatial data technology company finished off the week with a bang after announcing a major contract win. Shares gained as much as 119% in intraday trading on Friday before closing the day up 114%.

Investors were scrambling to get their hands on the ASX share reporting that its existing customer, Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), had chosen Pointerra's US Engineer, Procure & Construct (EPC) partners for its 10-year, US$15 billion grid resilience CAPEX Program.

That contract could be worth US$80 million to US$160 million over its life.

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) share price is having a sensational finish to the week.

At one stage today, the ASX tech share was up almost 120% to 21 cents.

The 3D geospatial data technology company's shares have eased back since then but remain up a solid 67% to 16 cents currently.

Why is this ASX tech share skyrocketing?

Investors have been scrambling to buy Pointerra's shares after it announced a major contract win.

According to the release, the company's existing customer, Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), has selected Pointerra's US Engineer, Procure & Construct (EPC) partners for its 10-year, US$15 billion grid resilience CAPEX Program.

Entergy is a US$21.9 billion (A$32.7 billion) Fortune 500 company that provides power to 3 million customers throughout Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The release notes that the Louisiana-based energy utility company plans to spend US$15 billion on an electric grid resilience CAPEX program.

The company's Pointerra3D product will be used to process and analyse 3D LiDAR and 2D imagery to build a digital twin of Entergy's electricity network. This will then allow Entergy and its EPC contractors to use Pointerra3D's world-first quick load electric grid assessment tools to rapidly assess and prioritise the works to be completed in the most cost-effective and efficient manner possible.

Over the term of the program, the ASX tech share will be paid a price per pole/structure inspected and analysed using Pointerra3D.

At present, the company expects that up to 4 million poles could be inspected and analysed using Pointerra3D during this time.

And while a rate has not been finalised for this program, management expects it to be similar to previous rates of between US$20 and $40 per pole. This suggests that the contract could be worth US$80 million to US$160 million over its life, with revenue expected to commence during FY 2024.

1) After a difficult 2022, it has been a great start to the new calendar year for stock market investors, with the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) up more than 6% in January.

US markets have been even stronger, especially the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQ: .IXIC), up close to 10% to start 2023.

But the good times could be about to come to a screaming halt, with Morgan Stanley's Michael Wilson warning "the stock market's January rally could end this week".

Wilson says the January rally is "just another bear-market trap" as central banks in the US and here in Australia prepare to hike interest rates yet further as they attempt to tame inflation.

2) It appears the ASX 200 index didn't get the Morgan Stanley memo, up a solid 0.46% to 7,516 in late morning trade on Tuesday.

So much for the oncoming economic slowdown here in Australia — the ASX 200 is up almost 8% over the past 12 months.

Perhaps it's like the Aussie consumer – we know there are some tough times ahead, especially for those with mortgages but also for renters – but damn it if we're not going to have some fun before reality bites.

The Woolworths Group Ltd (ASX: WOW) share price is up 2.6% to $35.66 on Tuesday, whereupon it trades on 26 times earnings and on a 2.6% fully franked dividend yield. I get the defensive nature of its earnings, but I'd rather take 4% in a savings account than risk my money on Woolworths shares at today's price.

3) Stock winner of the day

Not many big winners to choose from today despite quarterly updates coming out faster than a Novak Djokovic serve.

The Moneyme Ltd (ASX: MME) share price is up 16% to 32.5 cents after the consumer money lender said it delivered record revenue and a statutory profit in Q2, "beating analyst expectations".

It's a welcome turnaround in the fortunes of the Moneyme share price, given it has fallen 83% in the past 12 months. Consumer lending faces some serious headwinds as the economy weakens, both from lower new loan originations and from higher defaults. As to whether that is already priced into Moneyme shares is anyone's guess, while acknowledging the company is managing to the current macro environment and is committed to driving profitable growth.

4) Stock loser(s) of the day

Unlike the winner's circle, we have plenty of losers to choose from for today's stock flops.

A trading update from former high-flyer BWX Ltd (ASX: BWX) was a shocker, with the owner of Sukin and other beauty and wellness products lowering revenue and profit guidance.

"We are revising our forecast on the basis of our cash-constrained environment having impacted our ability to trade effectively and led to a temporary increase in out of stocks and a need to reduce promotions to conserve cash and protect stock levels."

The BWX share price has fallen 93.5% in the past 12 months. Steer well clear of this fallen knife.

I've long been mystified by the huge market capitalisation placed on Megaport Ltd (ASX: MP1) given its relatively modest size.

The "global leading provider of Elastic Interconnection services" said total revenue for the Q2 was $37 million, up 10% quarter on quarter, and delivered earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) profit for the quarter. Although revenue is sticky due to low customer churn, Megaport did note the "current economic uncertainty seems to be delaying customer decision making, lengthening sales cycles".

The Megaport share price is down 16% to $6.45 in Tuesday trading, and off 52% over the past 12 months. With a market capitalisation of $1 billion, even after today's fall, investors are being asked to pay a pretty price for a pretty modestly sized company.

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX:3 DP) share price is on the nose today, down 17% to 19 cents, after the company that "helps customers answer almost any physical asset management question" said program delays by some US customers impacted invoicing in Q2.

The Pointerra share price went parabolic in early 2021, soaring at one stage over 30 times in value as investor enthusiasm went nuts. It's been mostly downhill since February 2021, with the Pointerra share price plunging 77% from those epic highs.

The rubber now needs to hit the road for Pointerra, with investors no longer valuing the company on hope. With a cash balance of just $2.75 million and the most recent quarter showing operating outflow of almost $1 million, investors better hope the "expected rebound in Q3 and Q4" becomes a reality.

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) share price is in the red this morning after the developer and provider of 3D geospatial data technology updated the market on its performance in the June quarter.

Since opening 11% lower at 23.5 cents, the tech stock has posted a slight recovery. The Pointerra share price is trading at 25 cents at the time of writing, representing a 5.66% fall.

Pointerra share price plunges despite record receipts

Highlights of Pointerra's quarterly activities and cash flow report included:

Quarterly invoicing came to a record $4.2 million

Cash receipts grew 21% on those of the prior corresponding period (PCP) to $1.7 million, but that's down from $2.4 million in the March quarter

Operating cash flow came to a $1.4 million outflow

Full-year cash receipts reached $7.9 million – a 93% increase

Pointerra ended the quarter with $3.6 million of cash and equivalents

The tech company also updated the market on its enterprise sales and annual contract value (ACV) this morning, noting the latter now totals U$18.2 million. That's US$1.9 million higher than it was at the end of April.

It also rose 86% between the end of the June quarter and the PCP, driven by the deployment of contracts in the United States energy sector, as well as growth across other targeted sectors.

What else happened in the June quarter?

The big news from Pointerra last quarter was of two contracts won in the United States.

A new contract signed with Florida Power and Light could have the potential to bring in at least US$250,000 each year, as could another with NextEra Energy.

The Pointerra share price surged 24% on the back of the announcement in June.

The company also continued improving its platform through the quarter just been.

What's next?

The company didn't provide any new earnings guidance today. However, it did provide a sunny outlook.

Revenue and cash from the company's newer contracts are expected to continue growing this financial year. However, a slight lag is expected as the company works to upload new customers' legacy data.

It also noted many customers have advocated their peers' adoption of Pointerra technology, driving down the cost of customer acquisition.

Pointerra share price snapshot

Both the Pointerra share price and the S&P/ASX All Technology Index (ASX: XTX) have struggled to gain traction this year.

They've slipped 37% and 28%, respectively, since the start of 2022.

Longer term, however, the company's stock is underperforming. It has dumped 40% in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, the All Tech Index has fallen 24%.

The All Ords Index climbed 1.94% today to 6,893.6 points. For perspective, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) also finished 1.94% in the green.

So let's take a look at which technology companies surged today.

ASX technology shares followed in the footsteps of their US counterparts. The NASDAQ-100 Technology Sector index surged 4.63% on US markets on Friday. On Sunday, US President Joe Biden unveiled a $600 billion infrastructure program. It's aimed at building health systems, energy technology, and information and communication technology networks, CNBC reported.

Pointerra shares closed 6.38% higher on Monday. The company also appeared to benefit from positive market sentiment for ASX tech shares. In recent news to the market, Pointerra announced two new contracts based in the United States.

Florida Power and Light will deploy the Pointerra3D Answers storm response product. Secondly, NextEra Energy will use Pointerra3D Analytics to support greenfield development and solar energy project sites in the USA.
The Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) share price is rocketing today.

Shares in the 3D geospatial data technology company are up 18.4% at the time of writing, after earlier posting gains of more than 22%.

Below are the highlights of the latest energy contract news that looks to be piquing ASX investor interest.

What energy contract news was announced?

The Pointerra share price is surging after the company reported that United States-based Florida Power and Light (FPL) has entered into new contracts for the Pointerra3D Answers storm response solution.

FPL, an existing Pointerra customer, will employ Pointerra3D Answers to support its storm response program, commencing with the 2022 storm season. Major storm response efforts can cost utilities US$100 million per event.

FPL will be able to load pre-storm and post-storm LiDAR collection that will be fully processed by Pointerra3D.

Pointerra said the results would be available within 24 hours for pre-storm collection and six hours for post-storm collection. It stated: "These delivery times are unprecedented in the industry and are only possible through leveraging Pointerra's proprietary and highly automated AI/ML algorithms and scalable cloud architecture."

The Pointerra3D Answers will "guide the deployment of FPL crews and resources critical to incident response and the restoration of power to customers".

Revenue from the new contracts will depend on the number of storm responses and how serious those storms are. Pointerra said revenue has "the potential to be material", and will be at least US$250,000 per year.

The Pointerra share price also looks to be getting a boost from the report that FPL's parent company, NextEra Energy, has entered into an enterprise subscription agreement to use Pointerra3D Analytics.

NextEra will employ Pointerra3D Analytics to support its multibillion-dollar greenfield development of solar energy project sites across continental US.

As with the FPL contract, Pointerra said revenue has the potential to be material and will be at least US$250,000 per year.

Pointerra share price snapshot

Despite today's leap, the Pointerra share price remains down 44% in 2022. That compares to a year-to-date loss of 16% posted by the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO).

Longer-term Pointerra shareholders will have little to complain about, however, with shares up 1,000% over the past five years.

In morning trade, the geospatial data technology company's shares are up over 9% to 29 cents.

This means that the Pointerra share price is now up over 50% since last Tuesday.

Why is the Pointerra share price rocketing higher?

The recent gain by the Pointerra share price is a bit of a mystery as there has been no news out of the company since the end of April.

That last piece of news saw the company report a 13% or US$1.9 million increase in quarterly annual contract value (ACV). This brought its total ACV to US$16.28 million as of 29 April 2022.

Management highlighted that its Pointerra3D service is rapidly becoming a "must-have" platform for the US energy utility sector with existing customers advocating adoption of the company's digital twin solution amongst peer utilities.

This is expected to drive further growth in platform deployment and ACV across Pointerra's largest sector.

In light of this positive outlook and the Pointerra share price down by over 50% since this time last year, it appears that some investors believe a buying opportunity has been created.

ASX investors appear unenthused by the latest report from Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP), with the company's share price 2% in the red to trade at 24 cents.

The ASX tech company released its March quarter activities and cash flow report this morning. Pointerra described March as a "landmark quarter" in which the company concurrently scaled up its platform use among four major US utility providers, while also broadly growing its annual contract value (ACV).

The company offers 3D geospatial data technology which enables clients to view locations around the world in real-time 3D format from any internet device.

Pointerra share price dips despite 71% growth in receipts

Highlights during the three months to 31 March included:

March quarter customer receipts of $2.4 million (71% year-on-year (YoY) growth vs. Q3 FY21)

Year-to-date customer receipts of $6.2 million (138% YoY growth vs. FY21)

Cash flow expenditure from operating activities of $2.3 million

Consecutive cash flow positive quarter from operations at $64,000

Cash flow expenditure from investing activities of $42,000

Cash and cash equivalents balance of $4.9 million as of 31 March

What happened in the March quarter for Pointerra?

The company continued to enhance its platform "in response to customer requests and in line with the Company's strategic product roadmap". The report highlighted a variety of improvements to the Pointerra3D Core, Pointerra3D Analytics, and Pointerra3D Answers segments of the platform.

Pointerra said the business is self-funding its organic growth. It said its analytics and answers segments, in particular, are "driving growth in ACV spend".

New customers have been added and existing customers across all six of Pointerra's target sectors — survey and mapping; AEC; utilities; transport; mining, oil and gas; and defence and intelligence — are increasing their ACV spend.

Pointerra reported a US$1.9 million increase in ACV in a separate enterprise sales and ACV update today. As at 29 April, ACV totals $US16.3 million, up from $US14.4 million as at 31 January.

What did management say?

According to the report:

The quarter was highlighted by step-change adoption in the scale of Pointerra3D platform deployment by US utility customers FPL, PG&E, Entergy & Eversource and reflects the continued development and adoption of the higher-value elements of the Pointerra3D solution portfolio — Analytics and Answers.

In relation to growing ACV, Pointerra said:

The Utility sector remains Pointerra's largest single contributor to ACV and whilst the US continues to dominate geographically, the quarter saw successful paid POC's delivered for Australian customers, which the Company expects to lead to new enterprise contracts in coming quarters, with new prospective clients in the United Kingdom and Europe also entering the sales pipeline during the quarter.

What's next for Pointerra?

Pointerra said it plans to accelerate the company's global expansion through the following initiatives:

Opening its first US office to provide a regional home for the business

Commencing operations in the UK to service the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region

Pursuing strategic M&A tuck-in acquisitions targeted to add domain knowledge in people and product in the AEC; transport; and mining, oil, and gas sectors

The Pointerra share price is down 40% year-to-date.
Key points

The Pointerra share price is currently up 8.22%, trading at 39.5 cents

The gain follows the company's announcement that its annual contract revenue increased 23% last quarter

Pointerra also plans to expand into the US and UK, as well as boost its Australian operations

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) share price is surging this morning after the company updated the market on its enterprise sales and annual contract value (ACV).

The company's ACV increased 23% over the December quarter as Pointerra3D apparently becomes a "must-have" platform for the United States' energy utility sector. As of today, its ACV stands at US$14.4 million.

At the time of writing, the Pointerra share price is 39.5 cents, 8.22% higher than its previous close.

Let's take a closer look at the news driving the technology company's stock.

Pointerra share price soars on US$2.7m ACV growth

The Pointerra share price is in the green after the company announced its ACV increased by US$2.7 million last quarter.

The boost was driven by an increase in both customer numbers and spending, as the company continued to branch into sectors including surveying and mapping, architecture, engineering and construction, utilities, transport, mining, and oil and gas.

Over the course of the December quarter – the results of which were released in the last fortnight – Pointerra was awarded between US$3.12 million and US$4.75 million of contracts within the US energy utility sector.

Additionally, Pointerra says its customers in the sector are pushing their peers to adopt the company's digital twin solution. That's expected to drive growth in the future.

As well, the company welcomed a record number of new customers over the December quarter.

The buoyant Pointerra share price is also likely being impacted by its growth plans.

The company will open its first office in the United States and begin operating in the United Kingdom. It's hoped its UK base will drive growth in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Pointerra is also on the lookout for mergers and acquisitions to add knowledge of people and product in key industries.

Finally, the company will be looking to bolster its personnel in Australia to support customer demand.

As the company's portfolio of customers matures in coming quarters, it will start reporting ACV totals by target sector.

Its disclosure metrics will also evolve. It plans to start reporting such measures as average revenue per subscription, customer churn, net incremental ACV, and gross margin in the future.

Shares in 3D geospatial data company Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) are rocketing today and now trade 12% higher at 40 cents apiece.

Investors are piling into Pointerra during Wednesday's session following the release of its December 2021 quarter (Q2 FY22) activities and cash flow report. Let's take a closer look.

Pointerra share price jumps solid cash flow results

The company outlined several investment highlights it had achieved last quarter, including:

Record quarterly cash receipts from customers $2.85 million

Cash flow positive quarter from operations $800,000

Energy Utilities Sector – material contracts awarded (between $4.33 and $6.6 million) and existing customers grow Actual Cash Value (ACV) spend

AEC Sector – new customers added and existing customers grow ACV spend

Survey & Mapping Sector – new customers added and existing customers grow ACV spend

Transport Sector – new customers added and existing customers grow ACV spend

Mining, Oil & Gas Sector – new customers added and existing customers grow ACV spend

What happened last quarter for Pointerra?

The quarter was highlighted by record cash receipts from customers to $2.85 million and cash flow from operations.

It also outlined several contract wins totalling between $4.33 million and $6.60 million, in the "strategically important US energy utilities sector" that was announced last year.

Coupled with these material contract awards, growth in spend by existing customers during the quarter generated further uplift in Pointerra's USD Actual Cash Value (ACV) run rate (ACV is akin to annual recurring revenue only for subscription services).

The company says it "looks forward to updating the market with a revised US$ ACV run rate, with the next update being provided by 31 January 2022 at the latest".

Pointerra says that a number of new customers were added during the quarter in its Survey and Mapping segment as well. Australian growth for instance is increasingly being driven by "state and local government agency mandates that survey & mapping firms deliver data via Pointerra3D Core".

Meanwhile, in the US, inside sales initiatives continued during the quarter which resulted in a "very large number of lower dollar ACV prospects".

Aside from that, the company realised a period of growth in all of its core operating segments, earmarked by the continued adoption of its "solution" by Australian road and rail operators.

During the quarter, payments for Research and Development (R&D) of $355,000 were made as salary allocations to team members who are "100% focused on R&D activities".

Pointerra notes that cash outflows for the quarter were 'in line with expectations' and that the balance sheet showed around $5 million in cash as of 31 December 2021.

What's next for Pointerra?

The company remains prioritised on R&D efforts to build out its strategic areas. Some of these include a platform to underpin the delivery of point cloud analytics to Pointerra3D Core customers and developing a catalogue of analytics algorithms for Pointerra3D Analytics customers.

Aside from that, Pointerra is focused on broadening the platform to support complementary data types and exploring methods to apply neural network machine learning.

The company didn't provide any specific revenue or profit guidance. The Pointerra share price is up 12% on the day and has rallied more than 8% in the past week of trading.

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX:3DP) share price finished the day up 17% after coming out of a trading halt with the announcement of three new US contracts.

The 3D geospatial data company resumed trading on the ASX this morning after requesting the halt on Friday with its share price frozen at 34.5 cents apiece.

Pointerra shares shot to 44.5 cents just after open, gaining 29%, before ending the session at 40.5 cents apiece.

Let's take a closer look at what the company announced.

What news did Pointerra release this morning?

The company announced a series of contracts with both new and existing US energy utility customers this morning: Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR), Pacific Gas & Electric (NYSE: PCG), and Gulf Power, a division of NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE).

Pointerra touts itself as the world's fastest end-to-end 3D data solutions company.

The Entergy contract will bring in between US$2.37- $US4 million (A$3.29-$5.56 million) with the final sum to be determined in the coming weeks.

Entergy is a US electricity producer and retail distributor but also operates natural gas distribution businesses in the US south. It has engaged Pointerra to help the company respond to damage to its network caused by Hurricane Ida in August.

The Pacific Gas & Electric contract is for around US$0.70 million (A$0.97 million) to commence a 'digital twin' project. This involves mapping the US company's assets in specific service areas over a 14 month period, starting 1 January 2022.

Finally, the collaboration with Gulf Power for US$0.05 million (A$0.07 million) covers processing work on the company's existing Pointerra3D platform.

What does this mean for Pointerra?

During Pointerra's recent Managing Director's presentation, the company announced it was expecting material growth in annual contract value (ACV) from a number of sectors.

According to the presentation, the company's previous ACV ran at US$11.7 million at the end of October.

This reflected continued efforts to add new customers and generate spending among existing customers in surveying and mapping, utilities, transport, mining, and oil and gas in both the US and Australian markets.

The company said it is pushing to solve "sector-specific challenges" in "AEC, Transport, Mining, Oil & Gas and Defence during recent quarters" by 2022-23. It plans to do this by continuing to invest in new people, capabilities, product, and research and development.

How has the Pointerra share price been performing this year?

The Pointerra share price has had a fairly volatile year, losing 23% of its value over the last 12 months and 20% year to date.

These returns have lagged the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) which is up more than 10% over the past year.

Shares in 3D geospatial data company Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) are currently on ice amid a company-requested trading halt today.

The ASX hit pause on the shares shortly after the open on Friday and they've been in limbo ever since. Prior to the halt, the Pointerra share price was fetching 34.5 cents, down 4.17% on its previous close.

Let's take a closer look at what's happening.

Why is Pointerra on ASX ice?

Pointerra requested the trading halt amid the pending release of a price-sensitive announcement.

The company says this is concerning "the award of material contracts in its US operation". There are no further details available at this time.

The halt will remain in place until the earlier of Pointerra making the abovementioned ASX announcement or the market open next Tuesday 14 December.

The announcement follows Pointerra's previous contract updates in September. At that time, the company had secured a $1.55 million contract with Florida Power & Light across 4 projects.

It also advised of another contract with Pacific Gas & Electric and Gridvision, each valued at approximately $250,000.

The contracts involve using Pointerra's geospatial 3D technology to model changes in key data metrics that the 2 new partners use in their operations.

For instance, the deal with Florida Power & Light will see Pointerra's technology model changes in vegetation growth. It will then extrapolate this data to predict vegetation growth, which will hopefully facilitate increased yields.

Pointerra share price snapshot

It's been more than a difficult year for Pointerra shareholders, who are swimming in a sea of red.

In the past 12 months, the Pointerra share price has fallen by almost 35%. The downward pressure continued in the past month of trading, with the price falling 11.5%.

These returns have lagged the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index (ASX: XJO) which is up 10% over the past year.

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) share price is struggling on Friday after the company released a sales update for the September quarter.

Third quarter highlights

Pointerra recapped a strong September quarter following the addition of new customers and increased spending from existing customers across key target sectors.

The company reported a September quarter annual contract value (ACV) of US$1.9 million, or a 19% increase against the June quarter. Total ACV as at 29 October now sits at US$11.7 million.

Pointerra was pleased to highlight a step change in its sales mix from being dominated by the US utilities and mapping sectors to a broader adoption across most target sectors. The target sectors being Survey & Mapping, Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries, utilities, oil & gas, transport as well as mining across the United States and Australia.

The company believes this also reflects its investment in new business development and sales resources, focused outside of utilities and mapping sectors.

Pointerra noted that its quarter-on-quarter cash receipts might vary as customers are onboarded with different payment cycles including multi-year in advance agreements.

Pointerra share price snapshot

The Pointerra share price posted some extraordinary gains between June 2020 and February this year, surging more than 2,000% from a mere 4 cents to all-time highs of 92.5 cents.

After hitting an all-time high of 92.5 cents on 15 February, the Pointerra share price has trended lower, hitting lows of 35 cents by late August.

Encouraging announcements such as its 14 September corporate presentation helped drive some life back into its share price, hitting a 3-month high of 58 cents shortly after.

However, the move to the upside was shortly met with selling pressure, sliding to the mid-low 40 cent level by October.

The Pointerra share price is down 18% year to date.

The Pointerra Ltd (ASX: 3DP) share price is under pressure on Monday.

At the time of writing, the 3D geospatial data technology company's shares are down 5.5% to 50.5 cents.

Why is the Pointerra share price falling?

Investors have been selling down the Pointerra share price after broad market weakness offset the release of a positive announcement.

According to the release, the company has won a number of contracts during September. This includes a $1.55 million contract with Florida Power & Light across four projects.

In addition, the company has signed contracts with Pacific Gas & Electric and Gridvision worth ~$0.25 million each.

What are the contracts covering?

The deal with Florida Power & Light includes a vegetation growth predictive analytics project. This will study and model the likely impact on powerline infrastructure of growth in vegetation adjacent to the powerline network over a 16-month period.

Using multiple aerial captures with multiple sensors over the project period, Pointerra3D will model change (delta) in vegetation growth and use the delta combined with species detection analytics to predict vegetation growth.

Management notes that the expected outcome for Florida Power & Light is better scheduling of vegetation management activities, which is a significant part of the utility's ongoing network asset management operations.

In addition, other projects with Florida Power & Light include weather related network change detection and the demonstration of the integration of IkeGPS Group Ltd's (ASX: IKE) highly regarded Poleforeman utility pole engineering software into Pointerra3D.

What else?

The contract with Pacific Gas & Electric is similar to the main Florida Power & Light contract. It is a vegetation management analytics project.

Whereas, finally, the contract with Gridvision is for mine powerline data capture and analytics campaigns for the power infrastructure network of a global tier-one miner's Australian operations.

Management believes the endorsement of the Pointerra3D solution by electrical engineering teams could accelerate adoption and spend by its mining sector customers as other business units are exposed to the technology and how it can solve their specific challenges.

Mining companies also are turning to Pointerra's technology platform.

The Pointerra share price may also be getting a boost as the company reported it is collaborating with the US Department of Defense. It said it is "responding to the requirement to constantly enhance the capability of the modern war fighter through the use of technology".

Pointerra reported the solution to modern defence needs is, "Automated analytics that fuses newly acquired and historic 3D spatial data and delivers insight in real-time to support informed decision making."
