Australia – and, perhaps as an extension, the ASX – could set to be a major player in the global hydrogen industry.

Goldman Sachs predicts our island home could tap in as a key exporter of the commodity.

Additionally, it expects the hydrogen market could be worth more than US$1 trillion ($1.4 trillion) by 2050.

Let's take a look at what might be in store for Australia's – and the ASX's – future in the green hydrogen space.

Could Australia host a prime spot in a $1.4 trillion industry?

According to analysts by Goldman Sachs, Australia could be up against regions including the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America in the race to supply hydrogen to potential major importers in Central Europe, Japan, Korea, and East China.

And we're going about it differently than other regions.

Australia's hydrogen strategy focuses on its ambition of becoming a global hydrogen hub – using its natural gas and access to low-cost renewable power to produce the energy commodity.

Australia's hydrogen industry is expected to ramp up from 2025, alongside that of Latin America, Europe, and Africa.

However, Australia and Europe have the lead in planned electrolyser capacity additions. They also offer the most funding for green hydrogen projects, such as those in the sights of many ASX shares.

Australia's National Hydrogen Strategy aims to place the nation as a key hydrogen exporter by 2030.

Looking to the future of the global industry, Goldman Sachs predicts up to 30% of hydrogen could be exported across borders – creating a new major international trade. For context, that's more than the amount of natural gas currently traded between nations.

It also believes the average size of hydrogen projects could increase more than 100 times over by 2025, while the cost of electrolysers needed to produce the energy commodity could drop 40%.

Making the case more exciting, the price of hydrogen could be par with that of diesel in long-haul heavy road transport by as early as 2027.

So, which ASX shares have the potential to be involved in the upcoming export commodity? Let's take a look.

What ASX shares are involved in hydrogen?

There are plenty of ASX shares already on the hydrogen bandwagon.

Of course, the most notable is Fortescue Metals Group Limited (ASX: FMG) and its green energy leg, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI).

It's creating a major electrolyser manufacturing facility in Queensland, as well as engaging in green hydrogen production and hydrogen-fuelled transport initiatives.

Meanwhile, Hazer Group Ltd (ASX: HZR) is working to create hydrogen and synthetic graphite using its HAZER Process.

Province Resources Ltd (ASX: PRL) is one step ahead with its HyEnergy Project, creating green hydrogen in Western Australia.

Speaking of the HyEnergy Project, Global Energy Ventures Ltd (ASX: GEV) recently began a feasibility study looking at transporting hydrogen from the project to key markets in Asia using its propriety compressed hydrogen ship.

Other ASX shares involved in hydrogen include Pure Hydrogen Corporation CDI (ASX: PH2) and Sparc Technologies Ltd (ASX: SPN).

The Global Energy Ventures Ltd (ASX: GEV) share price has come out of a trading halt today. This follows an update in regards to its capital raising efforts from the energy solutions company.

However, the news has not been well received by investors. At the time of writing, Global Energy shares are down a sizeable 9.68% to 14 cents. For context, the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is down 0.71% to 7,682 points.

Successful placement

In a statement to the ASX, Global Energy advised it has successfully completed its institutional placement.

The company received firm commitments from both new and existing institutional, sophisticated, and professional investors to raise $10 million (before costs).

The placement will see 80 million new ordinary shares issued at a price of 12.5 cents apiece. This represents a 24% discount on the last closing price on 8 November, and a 10.5% discount on the 15-day volume-weighted average price.

The funds acquired from the placement will be used to accelerate the development of the Tiwi green hydrogen project in the Northern Territory. This includes:

Tiwi green hydrogen project feasibility study;

Ongoing engineering and approvals for the pilot compressed hydrogen ship;

Administration costs; and

General working capital.

The newly created shares are expected to be allotted and issued on 17 November.

In addition to the placement, Global Energy will undertake a non-underwritten share purchase plan (SPP), raising another $2 million. The terms will be the same as offered in the institutional placement.

The SPP will open on 22 November, with settlement on 13 December.

Global Energy managing director and CEO Martin Carolan commented:

The company's launch into the upstream green hydrogen production with the Tiwi green hydrogen project provides a unique investment opportunity as the company positions compression as a first mover advantage into the production, storage and transport of hydrogen.

The capital raising will accelerate the development of the Tiwi green hydrogen project while also supporting our ongoing engineering, approvals and commercialisation for our proprietary ship design.

Over the last 12 months, Global Energy shares have accelerated by around 50%. They are also up 75% year to date.

Global Energy presides a market capitalisation of roughly $70 million, with approximately 457.17 million shares on its registry.

The Global Energy Ventures Ltd (ASX: GEV) share price is surging higher today following news of a study into exporting hydrogen.

The company has announced the beginning of a feasibility study into transporting hydrogen from Western Australia to markets in the Asia Pacific region using its compressed hydrogen ships.

Global Energy Ventures specialises in energy transportation. It is currently an early mover in the transportation of hydrogen.

Earlier today, the Global Energy share price jumped by 12% to 9.2 cents. It has since partially retreated to 8.7 cents, a 7.4% gain on its previous close.

Let's take a closer look at the latest news from Global Energy Ventures.

Study into shipping hydrogen begins

The Global Energy share price is taking off on the back of a new study into transporting green hydrogen.

Hydrogen is labelled 'green' when it's processed using renewable energy.

The feasibility study will look into the possibility of transporting hydrogen from Province Resources Ltd's (ASX: PRL) HyEnergy Zero Carbon Hydrogen Project using Global Energy Ventures' compressed hydrogen shipping solution.

The study recently received up to $300,000 of funding from the Western Australian government.

It will integrate the HyEnergy Project's proposed green hydrogen production facility, an onshore compression facility, and an offshore mooring and loading system.

Global Energy Ventures proposes to build the onshore compression facility and offshore terminal.

The study will also integrate a fleet of compressed hydrogen ships, like those owned by Global Energy Ventures, for marine transport. It will assess the potential to transport the green hydrogen to markets in the Asia Pacific region.

The study is expected to be finished in the June quarter of 2022.

Global Energy share price snapshot

This year has been particularly good to the Global Energy Ventures share price.

Right now, the company's share price is 11% higher than it was at the start of 2021. It has also gained 48% since this time last year.

September is a notoriously tough month for global markets but a number of ASX hydrogen shares have pushed through.

While the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) fell 2.6% over the course of last month, some ASX hydrogen and hydrogen-adjacent shares managed to record decent gains.

So, without further ado, here were the top-performing ASX-listed companies working or looking to break into the hydrogen sector in September.

Top performing ASX hydrogen shares of September

Pure Hydrogen Corporation CDI (ASX: PH2)

The Pure Hydrogen share price bested those of its peers last month, gaining 14.2%. At the end of September, its shares were swapping hands for 24 cents apiece.

The gas and hydrogen producer released several updates last month, including its strategy to profit from hydrogen projects in Botswana.

The Pure Hydrogen share price gained 8.7% on the strategy's release.

Origin Energy Ltd (ASX: ORG)

Origin Energy is a newcomer to the hydrogen scene. In fact, the energy producer and retailer is still in the testing phase of hydrogen production.

Origin's feasibility study into producing hydrogen and ammonia in Tasmania using renewable energy is due to be completed in December.

The Origin share price gained 6.2% in September. It finished the month trading at $4.73.

Global Energy Ventures Ltd (ASX: GEV)

Another hydrogen-adjacent share topped the list of the best performers last month.

The Global Energy Ventures share price gained 5.4% over September, finishing the month trading at 7.8 cents.

The company is developing shipping solutions for natural gas and green hydrogen. It owns the world's first large scale compressed hydrogen ship, allowing marine transportation of hydrogen.

The company's stock was boosted last month when it received a renewable hydrogen energy grant from the Western Australian government. The grant will help fund a feasibility study into exporting green hydrogen.

Honourable mention for a not-quite ASX hydrogen share

Santos Ltd (ASX: STO)

An honourable mention goes to a company that's still just looking to break into the hydrogen space.

Santos has flagged hydrogen as one of its potential future endeavours a number of times. Perhaps most recently, it's come on the back of news of its merger with Oil Search Ltd (ASX: OSH).

As The Motley Fool Australia reported, the oil and gas producer's CEO and managing director Kevin Gallagher commented that extra cash brought about by the merger might allow the companies to advance potential hydrogen initiatives.

The Santos share price gained a whopping 18.5% over the course of September.

The Global Energy Ventures Ltd (ASX: GEV) share price is on the move today. This comes after the energy solutions company secured a renewable hydrogen grant from the Western Australian government.

At the time of writing, Global Energy shares are up 22.22% to 8.8 cents apiece.

Global Energy chosen for feasibility funding

According to its release, Global Energy advised it has successfully secured funding support of up to $300,000.

Global Energy will undertake a feasibility study on the export of green hydrogen utilising its compressed hydrogen shipping solution. This will see clean renewable energy transported from the HyEnergy Project, located in the Gascoyne, to Asia-Pacific.

Early preparation work and site assessment has since been completed with key appointments of technical and environmental advisors next up.

The scope of the project includes the transport of hydrogen from onshore compression facilities to an offshore ship loading buoy. From there, the hydrogen will be distributed to nominated Asia-Pacific markets using Global Energy's compressed hydrogen ships.

It is expected the project will be online within the first-half of the 2022 financial year.

Global Energy managing director and CEO Martin Carolan commented:

One of the strategic focus areas for the WA Government's Hydrogen Strategy is Export. GEV, together with the HyEnergy Project partners, aims to harness WA's world class renewable energy resources and proud history of exporting energy to international markets, to develop the first green hydrogen export project using our compressed shipping supply chain.

More on the compressed hydrogen ship and zero-carbon marine transport

Global Energy noted that compression is a proven, safe and reliable method of storing hydrogen. It is currently used for onshore applications at pressures of up to 700 bar.

The ship design stores hydrogen in a gas form thus avoiding the energy and capital-intensive processes to convert hydrogen to a liquid or chemical state.

In future, compressed hydrogen shipping will focus on developing a zero-emission supply chain through the use of electric drive engines powered by onboard fuel cells.

Global Energy share price summary

Over the last 12 months, Global Energy shares have accelerated 83% higher but are not quite so impressive year-to-date, up 11%.

Global Energy presides a market capitalisation of roughly $41 million, with approximately 457 million shares on its registry.

The Global Energy Ventures Ltd (ASX: GEV) share price is leaping higher today, up 6% at time of writing, having earlier posted gains of more than 9%.

The company is focused on delivering compressed shipping solutions to produce, store and transport compressed hydrogen to regional markets surrounding Australia.

Below we take a look at the ASX energy share's announcement that appears to be driving ASX investor interest.

What did Global Energy announce?

Global Energy's share price is surging after the company reported it has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding MOU) with Province Resources Ltd (ASX: PRL) and Total Eren on a new green hydrogen shipping study.

The partnership will help determine the feasibility, both commercial and technical, of exporting compressed hydrogen from the HyEnergy Project in Western Australia to select markets in Asia-Pacific, making use of Global Energy's compressed hydrogen marine supply chain.

Following completion of the study, Global Energy hopes the partners of the HyEnergy Project will have sufficient confidence to select its C-H2 marine transport supply chain for green hydrogen exports in the next phase of project engineering.

Commenting on the MOU, Global Energy's managing director Martin Carolan said:

The HyEnergy Project is an ideal green hydrogen export project for our compressed hydrogen shipping solution given its strategic location on the W.A. Gascoyne coastline, within a regional distance to multiple Asian markets with a future requirement for imported hydrogen.

Province Resources CEO, David Frances added:

The HyEnergy Project partners are keen to understand the benefits of compressed hydrogen in relation to other means of transporting our potential green hydrogen product to market. GEV are leaders in this technology and will bring that experience to the study.

The non-binding, non-exclusive MOU expires on 31 December 2022.

Global Energy share price snapshot
