ASX gold shares have been enjoying a tremendous run over the past seven weeks.

As you're likely aware, the outsized gains many of the Aussie gold miners have been posting since the end of February have been fuelled by a fast-rising gold price.

It was only back on 15 February, that an ounce of gold was trading for US$1,992 per ounce. Which was already near historic highs.

Over the weeks that followed, the yellow metal surged to set a series of new all-time highs, topping US$2,392 per ounce on Friday.

At the time of writing on Monday, that same ounce is worth $US2,378.

As for the performance of ASX gold shares, the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD) has rocketed 27.3% since the closing bell on 28 February. That's even more remarkable as over this same period the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is down 0.3%.

So, with these big gains already in the bag, is it too late to go prospecting for multi-bagger gold stocks?

Not according to Collins St Asset Management chief investment officer Vasilios Piperoglou.

Targeting multi-bagger gains from small-cap ASX gold shares

As The Australian Financial Review reports, Collins St made some outsized returns from their early investment in uranium and late by backing offshore oil services stocks.

But Piperoglou believes the opportunity presented by ASX gold shares, particularly in the small-cap space, could outshine those previous successes.

"With gold stocks, the way the asymmetry is playing out currently, I think there is a greater potential in this than the other two," he said. "We're seeing the very early signs of the start of a gold bull market."

And Piperoglou doesn't believe ASX investors will have to wait around for years for some of the top junior gold miners to double, or more, in value. The kind of multi-bagger we all like to have in our portfolios.

"At some stage, investors are going to get smacked in the face," he said. "There will be a moment within months, not years, where people wake up and these quality small-caps will multi-bag."

The small-cap ASX gold shares currently owned by the Collins St value fund include:

Barton Gold Holdings Ltd (ASX: BGD)

Brightstar Resources Ltd (ASX: BTR)

Odyssey Gold Ltd (ASX: ODY)

Namely Ramelius Resources Ltd (ASX: RMS) and Westgold Resources Ltd (ASX: WGX).

But this little known ASX gold share is leaving those gains in the dust.

We're talking about Great Boulder Resources Ltd (ASX: GBR), which is up 9.89% at the time of writing after earlier posting gains of more than 15%.

Here's what's piquing ASX investor interest.

What's sending this ASX gold share higher?

The Great Boulder Resources share price is leaping higher after the company reported it has identified a new high-grade gold lode at its Side Well Gold Project, located in Western Australia.

The results come from an area close by the Mulga Bill High-Grade Vein, where Great Boulder has struck significant gold intersections in recent drilling.

The results of the new drill hole, the first drilling in that location, returned 6 metres at 25.83 grams/tonne of gold from 268 metres.

Commenting on the Mulga Bill drill results sending the ASX gold share higher today, Great Boulder Resources managing director, Andrew Paterson said:

There are two results of particular interest in this batch of results. Firstly, the identification of a new high-grade lode where we drilled a deep intersection of 6m @ 25.83g/t Au is a great result with exciting implications for new mineralisation.

Secondly the 3m @ 7.03g/t Au in hole 22MBRC048 sits in the gap between the HGV and Main zones at Mulga Bill, so we are hoping to define a new zone in that area to improve continuity of mineralisation between the two high-grade areas

Reverse circulation (RC) drilling is ongoing at the site, and Great Boulder expects more results in the coming weeks.

Great Boulder Resources share price snapshot

Despite today's big push higher, ASX gold share Great Boulder Resources remains down 27% in 2022. That compares to a year-to-date loss of 13% posted by the All Ordinaries.

The Great Boulder Resources Ltd (ASX: GBR) share price has slipped from its all-time high in recent days and now trades at 17.5 cents.

In fact, Great Boulder shares have been on a bumpy ride since we started walking through September, having climbed 105% in a matter of weeks.

Read on for more details.

A quick rundown on Great Boulder Resources

Great Boulder Resources is in the minerals exploration business, with particular niche expertise in nickel, copper, cobalt and gold resources in WA.

The company has its footprint located in Australia and derives all of its revenue from the local market.

At the time of writing, Great Boulder has a market capitalisation of $73 million.

Why is the Great Boulder share price down today?

In order to answer this question, we first have to take a step back and take a look at what led us here in the first place.

On 2 September, Great Boulder announced initial results from the third phase of its reverse circulation (RC) drilling program at its Mulga Bill prospect in WA.

The assay results revealed significant gold grades across 6 holes at the prospect, which are the highest grades ever recorded at the site.

Immediately the Great Boulder share price jumped 108% to 17.5 cents on the day of the announcement.

Since, shares in the mining exploration company have trended sideways, before making another jump on 23 September to reach all-time highs of 20.5 cents apiece.

As of today, the company released another announcement on its Mulga Bill prospect, noting it had found another gold mineralisation at the site.

Final results from the company's RC drilling program at Mulga Bill "highlight the continuity of significant gold mineralisation on the eastern trend at (the site) over 400 metres in strike".

Speaking on the results, Great Boulder's managing director, Andrew Paterson said:

Infill RC drilling continues to define the high-grade zones in the central area of Mulga Bill. We have now completed a fourth round of RC drilling which is continuing to build our confidence in the high grade gold structures.

Investors appear to have wanted more milk from the cow in the Mulga Bill prospect, and have sold Great Boulder shares on the news.

It remains unclear exactly as to why investors are unhappy with the news, but the company did release a response to a query from the ASX regarding its share price and volume today as well. Perhaps this is weighing in some.

Currently, the Great Boulder share price is trading down 18% on the day, back towards its average September price level.

Great Boulder Resources share price snapshot

The Great Boulder share price has gained a mammoth 258% this year to date, extending its gains in the past 12 months to 243%.

Both of these results have outpaced the S&P/ASX 200 index (ASX: XJO)'s return of about 25% in the last year.

The Great Boulder Resources Ltd (ASX: GBR) share price is accelerating on Thursday. This comes after the Australian miner released its drilling results at the Mulga Bill prospect within the Side Well Project.

At the time of writing, the Great Boulder share price is up a sizeable 68.6% to 14.5 cents apiece. In comparison, the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is down 0.87% to 7,745 points.

What were the results?

In today's statement, Great Boulder revealed the initial results from its third phase of reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the site in Western Australia.

The first assays returned significant grades of gold across 6 holes at the site. They are as follows:

14-metre intercept at 36.12 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold (Au) from a depth of 91 metres, including 3 metres at 149.89g/t Au from 91 metres (21MBRC034);

6-metre intercept at 24.33g/t Au from a depth of 132 metres, including 4 metres at 34.86g/t Au from 134 metres (21MBRC034); and

2-metre intercept at 9.61g/t Au from a depth of 100 metres (21MBRC036).

The bonanza results are the highest grades ever recorded at the Side Well Project and seem to have had a positive effect on the Great Boulder share price.

In total, 15 RC holes were drilled as part of the program. Nine holes remain to be evaluated and reported. The findings are expected in the next fortnight.

In addition, diamond drilling was completed in mid-August, with those results anticipated in October.

RC drilling is ongoing at Mulga Bill and air-core (AC) drilling is due to start at the Whiteheads Gold Project in Western Australia later this month.

Management commentary

Managing director Andrew Paterson commented on the results which are driving the Great Boulder share price:

These results demonstrate the high-grade potential at Mulga Bill. We're learning more about the potential of this project with every drill program.

Given its location, size and the results we've seen to date I think Mulga Bill has the potential to have a plus million-ounce gold endowment.

These holes were drilled at the start of July, indicating assay results are currently taking 8 weeks to report. We have over 4,000 samples in the pipeline which we'll be reporting as soon as results are available.

About the Great Boulder share price

This follows yesterday's rise of more than 80% for the company's shares after separate gold intersection results were released to the market.

Great Boulder Resources is a relatively new Australian miner that's focused on nickel, copper, cobalt and gold mining. Its current mining focus is on the lucrative Esperance Goldfields in Western Australia

Golden age

Today's surge in the Great Boulder share price comes after the company reported initial results from reverse circulation (RC) drilling at its Mulga Bill prospect within the Side Well Gold Project in Western Australia.

The company says that RC drilling undertaken beneath a high-grade air-core (AC) drilling intersection in one drilling hole returned an "extremely high-grade zone" of six metres at 31.2g/t Au from 130 metres deep, including one metre of 136g/t Au from 132 metres deep.

The results from a four-metre composite AC intersection have been re-assayed and returned a more accurate result of three metres at 34.5g/t Au from 32 metres deep. The updated result follows resampling in one-metre sample intervals.

Another RC hole the company drilled directly below the former intersected three metres of quartz veining with no significant gold assays. This intersection will be re-assayed to check for coarse gold. Meanwhile, a second RC hole drilled 50 metres to the north of this section intersected 14 metres at 2.62g/t Au from 88 metres deep, including four metres at 5.86g/t Au.

The remaining results from this 4,000m RC program are expected in the coming weeks.

Management comments

Great Boulder managing director Andrew Paterson was clearly excited by the company's drilling results, saying:

These are stunning results. We were initially excited with the AC result in hole 022 because it's associated with quartz veining high in the weathering profile. That immediately draws comparison to the Wilber Lode at Andy Well. Resampling that intersection has returned even higher grades. To hit 6 metres at over an ounce per tonne below this zone that is a sensational result.

Coming on the back of our recent success at Whiteheads, these exceptional results from Mulga Bill validate our approach and the solid technical work we've been doing for the past two years.

Great Boulder share price snapshot

The Great Boulder share price has now risen a ridiculous 145% in one week, 257% over the past month and almost 300% over the past 12 months. The company has a market capitalisation of around $23 million.

Prior to the pause in trade, shares in the mineral exploration company were trading at 8.3 cents – up an astonishing 80.44%. At one point during intraday trade, shares had more than doubled to a 52-week record of 9.3 cents each.

At the same time, the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) is currently trading 0.39% higher today.

The company's explosive price growth comes after it announced a "large scale gold discovery" at one of its mines in Western Australia.

News of the trading halt "pending a further announcement" related to other drilling results then followed just seven hours later.

Let's take a closer look at today's news.

Company profile

Great Boulder Resources is a relatively new mineral exploration company with a primary focus on exploration, discovery and delineation of nickel-copper-cobalt and gold resources within the Eastern Goldfields Region of Western Australia. It holds interest in various projects such as Winchester, Mt Carlon, Tarmoola, Yamarna and Whiteheads.

Great Boulder shares strike gold

In a statement to the ASX, Great Boulder declared its results from initial drilling "at the Blue Poles discovery within the Whiteheads Gold Project" in WA.

According to the company, today's results confirmed 450m of gold mineralisation strike at the mining project.

The company highlighted the following results:

A 40m wide ore with 1.15g of gold per tonne.

A 40m wide ore with 1.03g of gold per tonne.

A 15m wide ore with 1.02g of gold per tonne.

The Great Boulder share price is not the only one heading higher today after positive gold announcements. Larger gold miner De Grey Mining Ltd (ASX: DEG) saw its shares increase by 11% at one point today following news of a gold strike.

Great Boulder says it will begin testing at The Gunners prospect after today's results. The company highlighted that The Gunners site is very similar to the Blue Poles prospect where today's results were found.

Gold commodity price

Gold is currently trading for around US$1,785 per troy ounce on the commodities market. It is down 0.36% today and 5.78% since the beginning of the year. It is, however, 3.38% higher over the last month.

The website Trading Economics attributes the precious metal's recent rise to "a weaker dollar and lower treasury yields" as well as fears over rising COVID cases in parts of the world. Gold is seen as a safe investment by some investors and thus, would benefit from pessimistic economic indicators, according to the website.

Great Boulder share price snapshot

Over the last 12 months, the Great Boulder share price has increased 165.5%. Of course, most of this has occurred only today. Before today's astronomical price rise, Great Boulder shares were trading lower when compared to the beginning of the year. At the end of the first trading day of 2021, shares were selling for 4.9 cents each.

Given its current valuation, Great Boulder has a market capitalisation of $21.1 million.
