Three ASX mining shares are beating gains made by some of their sector peers on Wednesday.

The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (ASX: XMJ) is doing poorly today, down 2.45% at the time of writing. Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) is also struggling, losing 1.53% loss so far today.

Yet the share prices of these ASX mining stocks are up 6% or more this afternoon. Let's cover their recent developments.

Far East Gold Ltd (ASX: FEG)

Far East Gold is a copper and gold exploration company. Its shares are up 6.67% to 72 cents each in late afternoon trading. There's no news from Far East today, but yesterday the company announced it had started drilling at its Woyla Copper-Gold Project in Aceh Province, Indonesia.

The Woyla Project was explored by two companies, Barrick and Newcrest. In the 25 years that the project has been around, no other company has been able to do as much exploration and drilling on the tenement.

The company notes this is the first time drilling has commenced at the site and that it further de-risks the project.

Lanthanein Resources Ltd (ASX: LNR)

Lanthanein Resources is a mineral exploration company recording gains of 8.7% in late afternoon trade. Again, there are no announcements from the company today to make sense of the surge in the share price.

In fact, the most recent announcement from the company was posted on Friday last week. The company updated the market on its maiden drilling at its Lyons Prospect in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia.

Drilling is targetting high-grade rare earth elements (REE). Thirteen out of the total 30 holes have been drilled at depths of 1,068 metres. Analysis of the drilled materials for composition and quality was said to be underway.

Drilling at the site began on 12 September.

Artemis Resources Ltd (ASX: ARV)

Finally, Artemis Resources is a gold and copper explorer. Its shares are up 14.29% at the time of writing. The company's most recent announcement was posted on 13 September, identifying a large copper-nickel system at its Chapman project in Western Australia.

Eleven holes were drilled to a depth of 3,011.3 metres.

Artemis Resources executive director Alastair Clayton commented on the finding:

Intersecting broad shallow zones of continuous copper and nickel at Chapman is encouraging, especially as these mineralised zones appear to be related to the margins of regional gabbros and related structures. Drilling at Chapman undertaken in 2021 intersected high-grade copper mineralisation over a wide interval. We look forward to refining and developing additional targets to further explore this ~1km long prospective trend.

The Western Australia-based battery materials explorer's shares were up as much as 50% to 30 cents in afternoon trade.

The GreenTech Metals now trading on the ASX after IPO

GreenTech Metals landed on the ASX boards this morning after raising $5 million at an IPO listing price of 20 cents per new share.

It is an exploration and development company focused on the discovery, development and acquisition of projects in Australia and overseas that contain metals and minerals used in the battery storage and electric vehicle sector.

These assets include the Whundo Project that was acquired from Artemis Resources Ltd (ASX: ARV), which is a major shareholder in the company. The Whundo Project is located approximately 40 km south-southwest of Karratha in the West Pilbara Region of Western Australia and is approximately 12.5 km southeast of the Radio Hill nickel plant.

Commenting on the IPO, Artemis' Executive Director, Alastair Clayton, said: "We are pleased to see GreenTech list on the ASX following their successful IPO raising, which was led by CPS Capital and strongly oversubscribed. With GreenTech expected to commence drilling at Whundo within the coming weeks, we see strong news flow across the portfolio in the short-term and throughout the year."

"With drill programmes due to re-commence at Paterson Central and Greater Carlow soon Artemis has a very busy schedule for 2022. We are delighted to see the GreenTech team already driving exploration hard and we retain considerable exposure to the success of GreenTech, both as the company's largest shareholder and as a joint-venture partner," he added.

The Artemis Resources Ltd (ASX: ARV) share price isn't doing much today. Artemis shares are stuck at 9.6 cents a share this afternoon. And that's where they are going to stay, at least for a while.

We received a market announcement this morning, just before the market open, on the matter. Artemis announced that its shares would remain in a trading halt until "the earlier of an announcement in relation to a capital raise or 12 May 2021".

Why? Here's what Artemis told investors:

The trading halt is necessary as the company is undertaking a bookbuild in relation to the capital raising.

The company wishes the trading halt to last until it announces the capital raising, or this Wednesday, whichever is the earlier.

There's no official confirmation of how the capital raise will operate or what Artemis will use the funds for. But a report in the Australian Financial Review (AFR) today cites sources that have floated a placement price of 10 cents a share for some institutional investors that operate in the small-cap resources space. It's worth pointing out that a price of 10 cents a share is above the price the company last closed at.

The report also states that the cash raised is earmarked to go towards the Carlow Castle project and Artemis' Paterson Central gold project in WA. If that proves the case, it would seem that Artemis plans to quickly build on its initial success at Carlow. However, we will have to wait for official confirmation from Artemis to be sure of these details.

About the Artemis Resources share price

An ASX gold and copper miner, Artemis has had a few months of relatively flat share price movements since it moved up more than 230% between June and August last year. In fact, the company is down roughly 20% year to date, and more than 12% in the past week. That's after the company rallied 14% late last month on the back of a quarterly production update, though.

This update informed the market that testing at the company's Carlow Castle resource area in Western Australia had yielded encouraging signs. Drilling at the site produced test results indicating gold concentrations of 4.36 grams per tonne of gold at a depth of 5 meters. The market was initially very excited about these results, but the sentiment seems to have cooled in the days since. It will be interesting to see how the market reacts when Artemis shares resume trading.

At the current (and frozen) share price, Artemis Resources has a market capitalisation of $104.17 million.

Shares in the gold and copper miner are rocketing higher today after its latest quarterly update.

Why is the Artermis share price rocketing higher?

Artemis reported that further batches of assays from its 42-hole, multi-rig Q4 2020 drilling at the Carlow Castle Gold Copper Project were received in the March quarter. Those results highlighted the success seen in the December quarter drilling program.

That includes a New Northern Discovery Zone with shallow reconnaissance RC holes ~250 metres north of the main Carlow Castle resource area. That contains 5 metres at 4.36 grams per tonne of gold (g/t), 1 metre at 3.03 g/t gold and 2 metres at 2.28 g/t.

The Main Carlow Castle zone also returned positive results with the deep hole drilling. The solid result includes hitting economic grade intersections ~630 metres below surface and 400 metres below the Main Eastern Zone.

Artemis said its knowledge of the structural, alteration and mineralogical controls at Carlow Castle has "increased immensely". The Artemis share price has rocketed higher today on the back of the positive update.

The results are returning high-grade gold, copper and cobalt assays on the main shoots. As a result, Artemis has started a new Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE). The company has engaged CSA Global who calculated the previous MRE in November 2019. Those updated estimates should be completed in May 2021.

The Artemis share price has been on fire throughout the day's trade as investors pile into the Aussie mining stock.

Artemis reported net operating cash outflows of $653,000 for the quarter. Total net cash used during the period across all activities totalled $3.37 million.

Foolish takeaway

Today's gain of 14.3% has pushed the Artemis share price to $0.12 with a $133.7 million market capitalisation. It means the Aussie gold and copper miner's value has quadrupled in the last 12 months thanks to strong drilling results at the flagship Carlow Castle site.

At the time of writing, the Artemis share price is up 8.7% to 12.5 cents.

What did Artemis announce?

The Artemis share price is on the rise today following news of the company's progress on its Carlow Castle and Paterson's Central Projects.

Carlow Castle Project

Artemis advised that its teams have gathered to commence a 10,000m reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the Carlow Castle gold, copper and cobalt project. The current 1.2km strike length is expected to grow as the company focuses on mineralisation to the main zone of the site.

In addition, a 1,000m diamond drilling at the eastern resource portion of the project will take place. This is expected to provide clarity on a mineralisation models, which will be completed by CSA Global.

Both locations are due to start drilling operations on Wednesday this week.

The company will conduct extensive induced polarization surveys — an exploration method used in mine operations — as it hopes to find new discoveries throughout the resource area.

Paterson's Central Project

Across to the other project, Artemis noted it is waiting on the first batches of assays from its selected in-field drill core at the Nimitz Target area. An assay is a chemical test performed on a sample of ores or minerals to determine the amount of valuable metals contained within the sample.

The company also advised it has initiated detailed planning for a multi-rig drill programme to cover 7 priority holes with a depth of about 800m. Follow-up drilling is also expected to begin at Nimitz South as well as a focus on the Apollo and Atlas targets for drilling.

The company is seeking to build an access route for its vehicles to the drilling holes, as well as an exploration camp and other supporting infrastructure. All construction, however, is pending environmental and heritage consent.

Management commentary

Artemis executive director Mr Alastair Clayton commented:

We have hit the ground running in 2021 in what we expect to be a seminal year for the Company. The Carlow Castle project is now in a full growth mode with new discovery zones identified in 2020 being followed up and the existing resource footprint growing in multiple directions. We are expecting additional assay results from the recently completed summer 2020 RC and diamond programmes soon in addition to the 11,000m of additional drilling that commences Wednesday.

He added:

At our Paterson's Central Project, where we await our first assays from selected core samples from our 2020 Nimitz drilling, we are already in the detailed planning phase of a far-reaching multi-rig 2021 drill programme. This involves establishing approved vehicular access to all of our 7 priority target areas and planning for a substantial permanent exploration camp and logistics base to support our long-term ambitions in the area.

About the Artemis share price

The Artemis share price has risen 400% in the course of the past 12 months. While the spot price of gold has surged, the company has taken advantage by ramping up its exploration activities.

The Artemis share price hit a 52-week low of 1.5 cents in March when COVID-19 sent investors fleeing for the hills. In the months that followed, the company's shares went on to reach a multi-year high of 17.5 cents.

The S&P/ASX 200 (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has built on yesterday's solid gain and is on course to finish the week on a positive note. At the time of writing the benchmark index is up a further 0.55% to 5,627.3 points.

Four shares that have climbed more than most today are listed below. Here's why they are ending the week on a high:

The Artemis Resources Ltd (ASX: ARV) share price has surged almost 14% higher to 12.5 cents despite there being no news out of the mineral resource exploration company. However, its shares have fallen hard this month and some investors may believe they have bottomed now. Artemis owns the Radio Hill Nickel Mine in the West Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The Atomos Limited (ASX: AMS) share price is up 12% to 46 cents. Atomos is a global video technology company delivering award-winning, simple to use and affordable monitor recorder content creation products. It arrived on the Australian share market this morning with a listing price of 41 cents, valuing the company at $62.2 million. This year it expects to achieve pro forma revenue of $42.2 million, up 18.5% from $35.6 million in FY 2018.

The BWX Ltd (ASX: BWX) share price has risen 9.5% to $1.53. The personal care products company's shares have been hammered this month after a surprise profit guidance downgrade. While I'm not prepared to make an investment just yet, its shares do look great value for those that are willing to bet on the company successfully turning around its poor performance.

The Orocobre Limited (ASX: ORE) share price has jumped 9% to $3.29. Investors appear to believe that the recent selloff of this lithium miner's shares has created a buying opportunity today. Orocobre's shares were hammered earlier this month when it revealed a sharp drop in the price of its lithium in the December quarter.

In afternoon trade the market is trading notably lower ahead of the G20 summit in Argentina this weekend.

Three small cap shares that have not let that hold them back are listed below. Here's why they are storming higher today:

The Artemis Resources Ltd (ASX: ARV) share price has stormed 12% higher to 15.7 cents. This morning the West Pilbara-based mineral developer announced that it has secured a $5.4 million funding package from a UK-based institutional group and has commenced an airborne survey on its Armada Prospect. The funding package from Riverfort Global Capital will be used for exploration activities at Armada, together with the next resource upgrade and preliminary metallurgical results from the Carlow Castle Au-Cu-Co Project.

The PWR Holdings Ltd (ASX: PWH) share price has surged 6% higher to $3.75 despite there being no news out of the cooling solutions provider to the auto industry. However, it appears that investors see value in PWR Holdings' shares at these levels after a recent pullback. One broker that certainly does is Morgans. Last month its analysts retained their add rating and increased the price target on its shares to $4.25 following its annual general meeting update. The broker liked the look of its new technology and believes it has a strong pipeline of work through to 2022.

The Redbubble Ltd (ASX: RBL) share price has stormed 13% higher to $1.13. This latest gain means that Redbubble's shares have bounced almost 38% higher since crashing to a 52-week low of 82 cents on Wednesday. The ecommerce company's shares crashed lower after it revealed changes to Google search algorithms had impacted its organic search sales by 3% year on year. One broker that wasn't overly concerned was Goldman Sachs. A note out of the investment bank revealed that it held firm with its buy rating and $1.95 price target despite the blip. Although Goldman acknowledges that there are short term risks, it reminded investors that its positive investment case is built around the long-term outlook which remains unchanged.
