Lt-Gen Leahy retired from the Australian Army in July 2008, after a 37-year career. He retired as a Lieutenant General in the position of Chief of Army, a position he held for 6 years. In this appointment he was directly accountable for Army's $6 billion annual budget and his responsibilities included the detailed management of personnel, operating and capital cost centres and the direct responsibility to raise, train and sustain the Army. He was the principal adviser to the Chief of the Defence Force on strategic matters related to the deployment of the Army on global combat operations. He is now a Professor and Foundation Director of the National Security Institute at the University of Canberra.
He is a technical adviser to the board of WarpForge Limited. In work related to charities he is the Chairman of Soldier On, Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal Committee in the ACT and the Australian Student Veterans Association. Lt Gen Peter Leahy's qualifications include UNSW, USACGS and Fellow, Australian Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies. He is also Member of Risk and Compliance Committee. |
