Best and worst stocks on the ASX today

The S&P / ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has dropped for the sixth day in a row, losing 0.8% to close at 5,062.5. The so-called ‘Santa rally’ has been renamed the ‘Santa slump’. Only consumer staples and the utilities sectors managed to inch into the black.

Here are the top five best performing stocks in the index today.

These stocks were the losers on the day.

  • Transfield Services (ASX: TSE) dropped 13.8% to 84.5 cents
  • Sundance Resources (ASX: SDL) fell 9% to 9.1 cents
  • QBE Insurance (ASX: QBE) closed down 5.5% at $10.40
  • McMillan Shakespeare (ASX: MMS) slumped 4.9% to $11.07
  • Seven Group Holdings (ASX: SVW) lost 4.7% to $7.37
