Best and worst stocks on the ASX today

The S&P / ASX 200 Index (Index: ^AXJO) (ASX: XJO) has continued its negative mood, losing 0.4% to 5,256.1. By sectors, gold suffered a massive fall of more than 7%, as the spot gold price plunged overnight. The Healthcare sector was the best performer, rising 0.5%.

Here are the top five best performing stocks in the index today.

  • Whitehaven Coal (ASX: WHC) soared 6.5% to $1.725
  • Ausdrill (ASX: ASL) gained 3.3% to 78.5 cents
  • Virgin Australia Holdings (ASX: VAH) rose 2.6% to 39.5 cents
  • NRW Holdings (ASX: NWH) added 2.6% to $1.185
  • Fairfax Media (ASX: FXJ) closed up 2.5% to 61.5 cents

These stocks were the losers on the day.

  • Silver Lake Resources (ASX: SLR) was smashed down 17.4% to 38 cents
  • Evolution Mining (ASX: EVN) dropped 14.3% to 51 cents
  • Resolute Mining (ASX: RSG) fell 12.3% to 46.5 cents
  • Kingsgate Consolidated (ASX: KCN) slumped 12% to 95 cents
  • Beadell Resources (ASX: BDR) closed down 9.3% to 68.5 cents
